The AC boardwalk is just a bunch of enormous facades hiding the casinos. Very missable. If you want to enjoy a boardwalk experience, go to Ocean City, about two towns south of AC.
But I would pick just one spot for the weekend, otherwise you'll be in the car (and in traffic) the whole time: Ocean City: Quintessential boardwalk experience. Cotton candy, mini golf, ferris wheel, the works. And a very nice beach. Cape May: Victorian B&Bs, great restuarants, nice walks on the seashore, lovely views. Amish Country: lots of shops with quilts and baskets, pretty farmlands, good food. |
If you insist on going to AC, I still can recommend driving down the coast from AC to Cape May. Also, check out Lucy the Elephant. Lucy is in a much safer neighborhood than the AC boardwalk, and it is on the same island as AC. I think either Ventnor or Atlantic Avenue should take you down there. I used to spend many summers at the Jersey shore, and there is a coastal road from AC to Cape May that winds through coastal marshes and shore towns.
