Overnight in NYC
 

Planning a birthday overnight in NYC. We only have one night and want to stay in a historic, or romantic (or both) hotel that will be convenient to good shopping and sights. Suggestions??

Hi, Laura. You have several options for romantic, historic hotels to stay in in New York City? What price range are you looking for? At best, it is going to be very expensive, but I need a more specific range and then I think I can give you some great suggestions as I lived there for many years. Have a good trip. There is definitely lots to do there.

is between $100-$150... I know that's not a lot for NYC, but thats the best I can do at the moment!
Willing to go a little higher for a GREAT place.
Would like to be in the general vacinity of Rockafeller Plaza, since we are hoping (but still working out tickets) to attend a David Letterman taping.

Hi, Laura. For a really great place and a night you will never forget (I assume you are going with someone), try the Plaza which is kind of close to Rockefeller Center. It is in the medium to high range. You may have to go to $175 or $200, but you will get excellent quality and service. It would be well worth your money. Another hotel chain you might want to consider is any of the Helmsley Hotels. Leona Helmsley got in a lot of trouble with the Feds, etc., but she runs an impeccable hotel. A room for one night will probably run between $150 and $175 as well. I doubt you will find anything you would want to stay in for $100. Have a great trip. Let me know if those do not work out. Try the hotel consolidator- Quikbook (www.quikbook.com) or 1-800-789-9887. I have no affiliation to them, but have used their services in the past in San Francisco and found them to be very satisfactory (I am sure I will use them again in the future). Their Web page describes the properties- they have several that are in good proximity to Rockefeller Center and then call the toll free number to ask for their rates (usually up to 50%25 or more off the rack rate!).
