Overnight from Boston

We're heading to a wedding next Sat. night in Boston next weekend. DH has business on Tuesday up there too, so we're looking for a romantic place to go for Sun/Mon within 1-2 hours from Boston. We're well travelled in the NE area, been to Portsmouth, NH, York, ME, Plimouth, MA, Salem, MA. I'm thinking southern NH/VT, but don't know of anything specific, any suggestions?

You mentioned romantic but would you prefer a city, town, beach ?

I thought of Burlington, VT & the Lake Champlain area ..nice restaurant, cafes, pretty lake but it's further than 1-2hours.

Providence, RI is within range and is on the river plus several good restaurants.

I like Rockport and if the weather is nice you could take a walk on the beach..it'll be quiet there and I'm not sure what will be open but may be worth looking into.

The Cape is another option....

Newport, RI is quiet and pleasant this time of the year.

Rockport is an easy drive and is nice and quiet this time of year.

Thank you all, I forgot about Rockport, last time we tried to go to the Gloucester area, it was a sunny warm weekend in Oct., and the place was packed, could not find a hotel room, so we left. I think we'll head in that direction again. And, I am looking for the country/small town, we live outside of NYC. When we travel, we like to find that quaint NE town where we can stay, park the car and walk around.

If you go to Rockport, stay away from the Sandy Bay Motor Inn. It,s tired, dirty and run down. Stick with a B&B close to town. Try Addison Choate Inn or Seven South Street.

Only because you mentioned NH/VT in your post, I would suggest the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, in particular Peterborough, which is a town where you can park the car and wander around galleries, shops, restaurants, and an excellent book store.

Thank you luvmaine, this area also looks like a good possibility, I don't think we've ever explored this part of NH, plus we can load up on that duty free liquor before heading back to NY.

Look in Meredith NH, north on 93, about 1 1/2 hrs. from boston, there is a small chain of bed and breakfrast, Inn at Mill Pond, wonderful setting, right on huge lake, good food, and small town atmosphere

Owlwoman: if you do decide on the Monadnock Region, here are some suggestions: for lunch or dinner, Alymer's restaurant on Main Street in Jaffrey or Pearl in Peterborough; breakfast at Nonie's or the diner in Peterborough; lunch and/or a beer at Harlow's Pub in Peterborough; the galleries in Depot Square, Peterborough, as well as The Toadstool Bookstore, 12 Pine, and other shops. Overnight at the Applegate B&B, 3 Maples B&B (both in Peterborough/Sharon), or the Hancock Inn in Hancock, NH.

Hi LuvMaine,
Thank you for suggesting Peterborough, we headed toward this region Sun afternoon, ended up staying at the Inn at Deerfield, which was very charming. Went into Peterborough for dinner and ended up at the Aqua Grill (lots was closed that evening). Ended up sitting at the bar next to the guy who played Boone on Lost and didn't even know it. They are working on a film in Peterborough. Drove around and explored the region and enjoyed the last remnants of foliage. Thanks again for the suggestion! It worked out very well.

I highly recommend the stonehedge inn, only about an hour away. There's a special dinner on the 21 featuring Guiliano who wrote Why French women don't get fat. There's a fire in the Bar Area.

That dinner unfortunately for you is on a Monday at 7. I'll be going and I'll bring my book for her to sign.
Mirielle Guiliano is there to promote the champage she represents and that will be served with each course.
