Outer Banks Vacation
We were thinking about renting a beach house in the outer banks in August. How's the weather at that time? I noticed that peak season ends mid-August.
Also, what is the best area for a bunch of 30's something friends looking to relax at the beach? A quiet area would be nice but close enough to restaurants/nightlife if we want to go there. Thanks! |
Weather in the OBX is great to the end of September, except for the occasional hurricane system. My understanding is that "high season" ends mid-August because in NC children return to school from summer vacation at that time.
There is not a lot of nightlife in the OBX, though more so in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk, less so in Duck and Corolla. But the beaches are nice and the water is warm. |
We have gone for the past two years in August and the weather was great. The rates also go down a bit on most rentals. We like to stay in Duck but you have to drive to find any nightlife. We get a house by the beach with a hot tub and pool and we really don't want to venture out too much since we have it all right there. Corolla is also nice, has a large area that has tons of restaurants, shops and things to do. Nags Head is an area some like to go to also, more commercialized but if you are looking to be close to heading out to alot of places that may be a consideration.

Check out this thread:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...liwl&fid=1 Weather will be HOT and muggy in August - water will be warm. Peak season ends because the southern kids go back to school early. Try to rent a house right on the beach - it's worth it. |
All I can say is you better start looking NOW if you want August. People rent places months ahead..but there are many rental agencies.
I would agree that overall you may want to be in the Nags Head area rather than further north for the widest selection of restaurants, etc., and if you choose the right area such as South Nags Head you are away from a lot of the traffic but still close enuf that drives to attractions are short. |
If you have no problems with when in August make it the last week or first in September best value for your money and less people. The weather is usually better than the height of the season, not as oppressive.
Definitely check out homes in the Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head area. Here is a link to a local vacation search: http://therealouterbanks.com/index.p...&Itemid=87 |
You've probably already set your schedule (better have by now), but remember, the Outer Banks actually start in the Atlantic Beach (Crystal Coast area). I've vacationed in the Hatteras area before -- last I recall - fairly "dry" area - if you know what I mean -- and not much doing past Ocracoke-- maybe not so much fun for a bunch of 30 somethings. But, if you are there long enough to take a ferry ride up the coast -- be sure to visit Atlantic Beach, NC. I live here and love it. Clean beaches and fabulous seafood restaurants -- one of my faves is The Island Grille -- little bisto-type fine dining restaurant oceanside. Killer fresh grilled trigger, tuna, and mahi. I've gone nuts over a new app they're doing now - grilled scallops over smoked gouda grits -- they serve it in a martini glass. Just awesome. My hubby and I usually sit at the bar. If you'd like to check it out -- their site is: www.islandgrillerestaurant.com If you come up this way, ask for Mary -- I'm probably sitting a few stools away.

We will, once again, be renting an oceanfront place for two weeks starting 23 August in South Nags Head.
"Dry?" Like that is some sort of obstacle for resourceful folks like you? Somehow I doubt it...if you're there the same time we are, stop by and we'll have a few, and I am not talking about kiddie beers, either LOL. |
We're heading to Pine Island on August 31 for two weeks - really looking forward to it - haven't been to the OBX for a couple years.
It'll be our first stay at Pine Island - the last four times we've stayed in Ocean Sands. |
