Outer banks trip...Need HELP and Advice

My family and I want to take a trip to the outer banks in August or September. We have a 3 year old and a baby. We will be driving there from Maryland. I need some advice on what islands to go to? Things to see (child friendly)? and things to do (child friendly)? Thanks for the info!

There have been several threads on this forum about the Outer Banks; you can search for Outer Banks or OBX.

Slad,

I would wait till September usually the best weather and prices on rentals are much cheaper. AS for areas I would recommend anywhere from Southern Shores to Nags Head. They will give you access to the Wright Memorial, Jockey's Ridge State Park and a lot of local dining. For more information visit therealouterbanks.com

The islands all run together and it's hard to tell which island you're on. I would stay somewhere around Nags Head, southern Nags head and choose ocean front so that the kids are close to the water and if you could find a pool, the kids would enjoy that also.

The only island that is seperate is Ocracoke and I definitely recommend a day visit there. You take your car on a free ferry from Hatteras. I think your children would get a kick out of that, well, the 3yr old anyway. I always find it a fun day.

frankly, if you want LOTS of answers to your questions i would go to www.obxconnection.com, register, and ask these same questions THERE.

You'll get a LOT of detail and possibilities from people who vacation in EVERY area; many own homes there as well.

Do it..trust me it will be worth it.

My family went to OBX last year for the first time. We stayed in Avon and had fun although I must say we were challenged to find many activities besides the beach. I think this would be true of any of the islands. We went to a couple of fishing piers, the Hatteras Lighthouse, the museum (not much to see there yet), etc. Your kids are too young to enjoy these activities (my kids range from 6 to 12 years old) however they may be fun for you and your wife. Definitely go out with a flashlight at night and look for crabs with your 3 year old. We are considering a return to OBX this year because the beach was unbelievably clean, warm and uncrowded. Hope you have fun.
