will my children be able to stick their toes in the water? |
only if they like FROZEN toes- the Atlantic is bitter cold this time of year...

Melissa, The average water temperature during December is about the same as the air temp. So figure mid 50s.
If your kids want to stick their toes in the surf, what is the worst thing that could happen? They'll scream and run for the towels! |
I can't speak for the OBX but over Thanksgiving the water temp was in the high 60's in Holden Beach & we were in the water. Depending on which part of OBX sometimes the water temp is actually warmer due to the gulfstream. Average temp for Cape Hatteras in December is 55. I can't seem to find an updated temp on any of the websites though.

so I guess that i will pack a pair of shorts if they want to venture into the water

I read this thread with interest having grown up near the Outer Banks. I always dared to swim in the winter, and then swore I would never do it again, only to do a polar bear swim the next year. Did you kids venture in? After watching the festivities on TV, I'm sure they got their toes wet one way or another! Sorry our NC weather put a damper on the flight, but it's something you come to love when you grow up here, and without it the Wright brothers wouldn't have flown when they did...

My son ventured in the water for a few minutes. said it was cold.
we had a great time at First Flight. it was too bad that it had to rain wednesday. Melissa |
