Outer Banks in the fall?
 

Want to head to the Outer Banks this weekend, (don't have reservations yet)...is there going to be enough to do being there for a week? Weather coming up looks cloudy and the two of us prefer outdoor activities; hiking, exploring, kayaking. Just don't want to go down to sit inside and read for a week. Any suggestions for things to do there would be great! Want to make it's not a ghost town in the fall. Thanks!

I've been the OBX in October (Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills) and it was fabulous. A little chillier, but still beautiful weather and plenty of things to do. A few restaurants were closed but we didn't lack things to see and do.

I have had spectacular weather every time I've gone to Topsail Beach, NC(south of Outer Banks) in October or November. My family and I will be at Topsail for Columbus Day week this year and expect fine weather.

Ferry to Ocracroke, Wright Brother's Memorial, Manteo, Whaleshead,etc. Lots of stuff to do.

Thanks for the encouragement! Can anyone give me specific ideas and/or places to visit? Open to anything to keep us busy. Also, any info or recommendations on kayaking?

There is also an alligator refuge/park?? that is good for hiking

Manteo/Roanoke Island - Lost Colony, Aquarium, Manteo village has a nice museum, Elizabethan gardens are beautiful...

Lost Colony recently had a fire in the costume shop; Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton worth a visit

October is still a "shoulder" season the OBX. Not much will be closed for the season.

Lots of places to rent kayaks but I'd start at Kitty Hawk Sports. They have numerous locations. I think they still do eco tours which are fun.

There's good light hiking in Nags Head Woods, a Nature Conservancy property on the sound side of the OBX.

I'll be there this weekend too. Weather looks fantastic, sunny and mid to upper 70s.
