Outer Banks for a night or two in April?
 

We'll be near the coast and since we've never been to the area, we'd like to detour for a day or so to see it and perhaps spend some time walking on the beach or riding bikes. Looking for a handsome place to spend a night or two. Not interested in nightlife at all. Doesn't need to be "luxurious," but definitely want someplace very nice.

Where near the coast are you going to be? It might make a difference in where it would be easiest for you to go.

We'll be travelling from Charleston, SC to the eastern shore of Maryland. Not sure yet what route we'll take.

It is a long haul to the Outer Banks from Charleston, SC - just so you know... Most that go there from here, go up and take the ferry, but it is about 7-8 hours from Charleston to the "Outer Banks" as there is no quick way to get there. Of course, if you are going that way anyway...

I'd look at both the Sanderling Inn in Duck and the First Colony Inn in Nags Head. I like the former but either would fit your needs.

As noted, it's a serious hike from Charleston to the Outer Banks. That said, once there, you're relatively well positioned to get to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for your trip to the MD eastern shore. You'll avoid the traffic ugliness and that is always a good thing.

I love the Inn at Corolla Light. It is a quaint inn and the area restaurants are great. The Timbuktu (sp) are good and there is a great Italian restaurant in Corolla called Nicoletta's. Also, in Duck, there is a good restaurant, not fancy, called Fishbones.
The Inn has rooms from all price ranges. I would look for a room that is clasified as large to luxury to guarantee spaces. Their small rooms are small.
