We are travelling to the area next month and are looking for recs for day trips and good eats.

recs:
Lighthouses; Curituck (sp?) very near or in Corolla; Bodie light between Duck & Hatteras; Hattaras light house (you should see this one).

State Park located on the OB. (with sand dunes)

Dolphin tours; Great tour that departs from the beach of the Sheraton. Get Tix in lobby. They take you out in the ocean where the dolphins are...

Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills (not Kitty Hawk. Kitty Hawk was the location of the wire service, thus the town name associated with the wire report, and is the historically incorrect place the Wright Brothers took their historic flight)

A microbrewery and aquarium in Manteo.

This is a neat area- you should have a great time. Very easy to intersperse quite beach time with little excursions.

Besides the light houses and the Wright Brothers museum already mentioned, you can also:
- take a ferry ride to Ocracoake island. Not much to do on the island (at least not when I was there 7-8 years ago), but the ferry ride is fun.
- tour an old english or spanish ship of some kind. I think this was is Manteo or some little town just before you cross over to the outer banks. You could walk around the ship and they had costumed characters to tell about life on the ships in the old days. Not sure what it was called or if it is still there.

Absolutely do not miss walking around on the Dunes. They are huge- unbelievable ! I pretended I was in Egypt. You can just walk and walk and walk and look back down the hill at your footsteps.

They also offer hang gliding lessons at the Dunes. I was a wimp and thought I would be afraid of the heights, so did not sign up- only my husband did. I went along to watch and photograph. You never really get that high up off the ground, you just follow the curve of the dune downhill, so I regret my option to skip it and if I am ever back in the area would for sure do it next time. The place you sign up is directly across from the dunes, so you could always go watch some other group first to check it out, before deciding if it interests you.

For food ideas, check out http://www.outer-banks.nc.us/eat.htm and www.goombays.com/menu.htm . Goombays is a fun, very casual place with tropical type food and atmosphere.

Do a search here on the subject. Don't forget to check out the southern end of OBX and Roanoke Island.

You really should see the "Lost Colony" play in Manteo..... also the Elizabethean gardens at the same location. Its worth the trip...also in Manteo is the Christmas Shop, Weeping Radish (brewery and great German food). The ship previous poster mentioned is also in Manteo. Sounds like Manteo is the place to visit.

Manteo is on Roanoke Island. Here are some web sites:

http://www.roanokeisland.com/

http://www.thelostcolony.org/

http://www.envirobx.com/

Do the search here on the Outer Banks. Follow these websites. You'll find more to do than you have time to do it.

By the way, the reason the Wright Brothers chose Nags Head for there flight experiments was because of the steady 20 MPH winds. The flights took place in Nags Head; Kitty Hawk just happened to be the site of the closest telegraph office.

I LOVE nags head ! my favorite place to go. very quite before or after the summer season if thats what you're looking for. best place to stay is in Payne Cottage usually rented by Sun Realty. the cottage is near milepost 13. we saw dolphin every morning and evening right from our deck! definitely go eat at the Weeping Radish and have some beer and good food. You MUST get dessert there also! have fun dont burn!

You should definitely go to Elizabeth's Cafe & Winery in Duck. The food and wine list are quite exceptional. At the other end of the ambience scale is Pigman Barbecue. It is more like a fast food joint, but if you like North Carolina vinegar barbecue, you should definitely try it.
