Outer Banks canoe tours
 

I'm looking at the canoe tours offered at Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, but I'm really a big ol' chicken when it comes to such activities. Can anyone comment on these trips, tell me what they're like? What kind of water they're in? Thanks!!

Xrae - Can you post a link to that tour? There are water impoundments there, and if that's what you're on it will be super easy, and maybe a bit boring.

If the trips are in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge they will be SUPER fun.

This is what I was looking at. [However, I forgot that my mother-in-law, who will be with us, recently had shoulder surgery and has been having trouble. So, that may put the kibbosh on this outing.]

Pea Island Pamlico Sound Canoe Tours

9:00 am - 12:00 noon
May through October: Thursdays

(3 hours); $35 per person ($20 for children, 12 years and under). FEE PROGRAM; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Explore the sound side of the Refuge with a marshside view. See marsh and shorebirds. Learn about the estuary, the Refuge, and local wildlife and plants. Meet at New Inlet.

There are also canoe trips at Alligator River. Do you think those would be better?

September/October: Wednesdays

(3 hours); $35 per person ($20 for children, 12 years and under). FEE PROGRAM; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Really get out into the WILD. The Milltail Creek Canoe/Kayak Trail System takes you deep into the wilds of this Refuge. This area is home to black bears, red wolves, American alligators, and more. Meet at the south end of Buffalo City Road.

The sound will most likely be calm - but it depends on the wind. I'm not sure how fun it would be - it might be OK, but for my money I'd think the alligator River one would be a lot more interesting. That's a trip I'd be unlikely to do alone - so a tour makes sense.

I think either one would be a great chance to see some wonderful birds etc. If you end up going, be sure to bring binoculars!

(I forgot to mention that I'd rather kayak both trips - if that's an option. Much easier than canoing and more stable.)
