Outer Banks, Atlantic Beach or New Bern
 

I'm visiting the Outer Banks in mid-September and I have Sheraton Points. There is a Sheraton in New Bern and one in Atlantic Beach.

I'd love feedback on the locations themselves (which is a better place to spend a few days as far as sightseeing in the area) and on the hotels.

If you want to spend time hanging around the beach and visiting Beaufort and Morehead City, then you want to be in Atlantic Beach. As I recall that Sheraton isn't right in Atlantic Beach, which is good in my opinion because the town of Atlantic Beach is kind of, well...scuzzy -- not in a worrisome way, but in kind of a tired and need of a face lift way. There are some okay restaurants though.

New Bern is, oh, about 30 minutes from the beach, and is a lovely little, historic town. But if you want beach, you want to be in Atlantic Beach.

Sorry -- I can't comment on the quality of the hotels. We rent a house at the other end of Bogue Banks.

redrover, you can't go wrong with either location, depending whether you want to be near rivers or the ocean. Ruff is right on about it being good that the Sheraton is not smack in Atlantic Beach because, to me, it is too tired and too commercial compared to the other beaches strung along that area (I love Emerald Isle!)

The Sheraton at Atlantic Beach is far away from the grit of the Circle and is is on the Oceanfront.They have a nice Sunday Buffet also.The one in New Bern is very nice also ,Its on the water lots of nice boats around and they have a very nice Buffet also.The only bad thing about New Bern are some bad areas that you have to drive through.I would take the Beach anyday.

I see this thread is a bit old, but if you haven't gone yet, I would say Atlantic Beach over New Bern. The Sheraton in New Bern is better than it was a couple of years ago, but I still would not recommend it.
