Outer Banks and Smoky Mountains
I am trying to plan a North Carolina trip in July. We would like to go to the Smoky Mountains west of Ashville for 4 nights and then will head over to the Outer Banks for 3 nights. Can any one please recommend scenic, comfortable, yet affordable lodging and let me know what attractions/activities are not to be missed? Thanks.

I have always enjoyed Blowing Rock NC. It is in the Blue Ridge Mtns. and it is so stunning. We stayed at a Bm n B called Gideon Ridge which isn't the least expensive option, but there are plenty of places in the town of Blowing Rock that look more affordable. We drove up to Grandfather Mtn and I think it was worth it.
Because the elevation in that area is around 3500 feet it stays cool so July would be perfect!
Of course if you go to Asheville, the Biltmore Estates is always a must see. Just a word of advice though this house doesn't have AC as it was built in the 1800's so the air can get kind of stale and warm in the summer. With that said, if you have never been I think it is worth at least one visit.

You won't need too much lodging on the OBX because you'll be in the car the whole day getting there. It is a LONG way. Where are you coming from?
Do you have children with you? Do you like to hike, bike, tube, fish? Staying on the edge of the Park may be the best--or in Pigeon Forge, if you have to.
I honestly don't think the OBX is in your trip. The beach at Wilmington might be.
