Is it worthwhile to do the trip from Kill devil hills to the Hatteras lighthouse? We'll be coming from Williamsburg and have reservations in K.D.Hills but wondered if it were interesting to drive all that way to the lighthouse. The next day we drive on by scenic route to Wilmington.Paul

I'm confused - couldn't you just stop at Hatteras the day after staying in KDH since you will be passing it on the scenic route to Wilmington? Cetainly, it is not an interesting enough drive to do it twice.

The scenic route I mean is the one taking route 264 from K.D.Hills passing Washington -New Bern-Jacksonville and then Wilmington. We dont want the bother of ferries going from Hatteras direct.Paul

Maybe someone else will see this who has done this trip, but I don't think the drive itself is very interesting at all - the one to Hatteras, I mean. Actually, I don't think the other drive you describe is scenic either. I guess you have to decide how much you want to see the lighthouse. With your limited time, and given you have to drive the next day as well, I would not do it.

When are you visiting? The lighthouse is open to climb up to Columbus Day (I think). If you can't climb it, I wouldn't drive all that way.
The Bodie Island lighthouse isn't that far away. You can't climb that one but it does have a small visitors center and some nature walkways. BTW, I don't think anyone has ever called Jacksonville scenic. |
Wez arrive in Kill devil hills on Sept.19th. We first planned to drive all the way to Ocracoke and the take the ferry the next day to continue our tour to Wilmington...but we dont want to have the long waits for the ferry so we decided to take the scenic route(as described in travel info) and also marked as such on our map at least for the greater part of the way. Thanks Paul

How long do you have to wait for the ferry? I really think this is the best way to combine the things you want to do. I remember driving south from Corolla once and I'm not sure it was your exact route, but it was not scenic at all.
