outer banks

are the outer banks good for swimming at the end of june? is the water warm enough and is it not too windy?

I vacation at Topsail Beach, 100 miles south. Generally, by Memorial Day, you can expect water temperature to pass 70 F. By late June, the temps are in the high 70s. As for wind, you might be happy to have a little blow in late-June for the air temps will likely be 85-95 F.

Orville and Wilbur Wright chose the Outer Banks to perform their flight tests because of the steady 20 MPH winds they typically incur. It's great for kite flying!

Warm water? If you're use to water along the Gulf Coast or Carribean, it's cold. If you're use to the water off the New England coast, it's warm. Everything is relative. Any time during the summer is fine for swimming there.

If you stay a bit farther south, at Emerald Isle, for example, the water is quite warm and it's not as windy. June should be beautiful on Hatteras, however, just a bit windier and the water rougher. The farther north you go from Cape Hatteras, the less Gulf Stream water warms the surf.

I am originally from an area 1 hour west of the Outer banks. As with almost all great places close by, you don't visit them as much. However, the water should be all right for swimming although the rip tide in that area can be very rough and the surf is typically rougher than that of the southern NC beaches. How rough the wind/water on can change from day to day.
