And for anyone who has time to plan, try this website:
http://www.athomeny.com
It's a service that lists accomodations for all budgets. You pick out a location where you would like to stay and you can rent rooms in someone's apartment. Some properties have pictures, etc. Never used the service myself but came across the site when I was researching for friends.

Hi Shadow,
Unfortunately my trip was part business and the business part has been postponed so I had to cancel my whole trip - so I won't be staying at the Comfort Inn. But once I do reschedule my trip if I still end up staying there then I'll let you know how it was - sorry to disappoint you!

Speedbuggy, the holiday season is the most expensive season in NYC. Book as early as possible - but be prepared for sticker shock.
I (or my pocketbook) likes going the week after Christmas. Everything is still decorated for Christmas. Prices drop dramatically. The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall is a fraction of the early December price - and they often offer buy 1, get 1 free tickets during the "slow dates". If you aren't particular, consider that week.
I've found that flying out on Christmas Day for a holiday trip (to NYC or other) is a great strategy. I'm able to spend Christmas Eve with family and then head off on my own.
Disney and other big parks are NOT included in this generalization!
