Orpheum Theatre - Stomp Many Questions..
My husband and I are coming to New York the end of August and have recieved tickets to STOMP (2nd row) as an anniversary gift.

Is this in a good neighborhood? We are from Maine and haven't been to New York before.

We are staying at the Raddison on Lexington, is the subway the best way to get to and from the show or is a cab better/safer?

Can anyone give us an idea of what to wear and some place fairly inexpensive places to eat (15-20 $ a plate)

Thanks for any info.

2nd Ave. and 8th Street. This is the East Village and neighborhood is fine. Take a #6 subway train DOWNTOWN - station is at 51st and Lexington - and get off at Astor Place. It is a short walk to the theater. For a NY dining experience consider the 2nd Avenue Deli, 10th and 2nd Ave. A taxi with tip would be about $7.

Angie -- The Orpheum is in the East Village and it's a perfectly fine neighborhood for you to be in, although not as "counter-culture" as it used to be. I would suggest that you take the subway there and, if you eat after the show, cab back.

In the neighborhood near the theater, there are some inexpensive places to eat. One of my favorites is Miracle Grill on 1st Ave around 9th or 10th street. It is southwestern-inspired and they have a little garden in the back. For even cheaper eats, try any of the Indian restaurants on 6th street between 1st and 2nd Aves. There's also a Russian diner that is pretty inexpensive, but I forget the name of it. Another choice would be 2nd Ave Deli -- traditional New York deli-style eats. Enjoy! Stomp is a really fun show.

After the show, you might enjoy a walk east on St. Mark's Place (8th Street), one of the few stretches of the East Village that retains at least a bit of the pre-gentrification charm. Some people call it a "freak show," because you'll see any number of young people dressed unusually and adorned with myriad tattoos and piercings.
Turn around or jump in a taxi when you get to Avenue A. Yes, it's perfectly safe. Enjoy

I second s's suggestion that you eat at the 2nd Avenue Deli...you won't regret it.

Angie,

That part of the Village is alot of fun and there are SO MANY restaurants that you can choose from.

Getting there would be alot more fun on the bus and the Lexinton Ave bus will get you just a block or two away, and you get a bit of a tour of the city on the way. Get on a bus that says E. Village right on Lexington Ave, it will then turn at 24th St. and head down 3rd Ave.

You might enjoy a couple of restaurants on 3rd Ave in the area as well, Lan, one of my favs is Japanese and wonderful food, at 10th and 3rd or right across the St. is UNO's (good pizza).

A MUST MUST MUST after theatre is Veniero's for coffee, and desert and one of the BEST places you will find anywhere. Alot of the better restaurants in the city serve their cakes and pasteries. It's on 1st around 12th St. Well worth the trip to NYC alone, lol.

STOMP is fun and LOUD, but very well done. IF you have your walking shoes on, you could walk back to your hotel and see some of the city. Walk back up 3rd Ave to 42nd St and turn left 1 block to Lexington AVe and up to your hotel.

The midtown area is safe at night, tons of people will be out walking too in that area.

Have a great time while you are here.

tweedy

Veniero's, mentioned in another post, is on E.11th St., between 1st and 2nd Ave - closer to 1st. The bus on Lexington is the #101 or #102. If you decide on the bus it is $1.50 in coin only. If you are going to use public transportation purchase the $4 Metro Card - unlimited use of bus and subway for a full day.

Veniero's is a great place, but it's only for dessert and coffee.

Miracle Grill is on First Ave at 7th St--between 7th and 6th, east side of the Ave--it has a wonderful garden and is great on a nice night.

The RUssian place someone is thinkiing of is the Ukrainian 24 hour place, Veselka, which I really really love, it is not at all expensive and food is not all Russian. 2nd Ave and 9th Street VERY near Stomp.

A polular way to spend an evening--eat at an Indian place on 6th St btw 1 & 2nd, then go to Veniero's or (my own preference) De Robertis, also on 1st Ave at 11th St, for Italian pastry and dessert, as Indian desserts aren't always what one wants--or, better, have dessert in both places.
