Orlando without car?
 

Hoping to visit Orlando next summer but I will only have had my licence for 7 months will any firms give me a rental? If not is the public transport, taxis or shuttle buses to and from the parks reliable, I would hate this to scupper my plans. Thanks

How OLD are you?

If you are over 25 you shouldn't have a problem renting a car. Having a car in Orlando is alot easier than the buses to and from the parks. Also you can get out to some of the great shopping outlets in the area as well.

If you won't have a car, stay on property at Disney, so transportation is simplified.

If you can wait until late August for your trip, you can book the Disney special which includes a room, lunch and dinner, and transportation from the airport all for as low as $100 per night. From Disney you can shuttle to International Drive and then hop public transportation.

Will you be 25 years of age? If so you can rent a car, if not it will probably be too expensive with their under-25-charges.

And the $100 includes the meals for TWO people.

You can rent at 23 but it will be expensive, you might want to just rent for 2 days...there is car rental right at the Disney parks.

Stay on property and this will not be an issue.

Disney has fantastic park transportation that is free.

Public transit in and around Orlando is a large pain in the butt. If you are going to just do Disney stay on property and use their transit.

If you want to do other things - Sea World, Universal etc - plys find some better places to eat you really need a car. And they are incredibly chepa - so for 2 or more - it's practically free.

It doesn;t matter how long you've had you lic - but your age does. Try the various places in FL - but you may have to pay a premium price.

Taking city transportation from Disney to anywhere is very time consuming!! If you don't mind it taking nearly 2 hours to get from Disney to the Florida Mall then by all means use public transportation. We took a taxi back to Disney and it cost $30 and took about 20 minutes. We also took a taxi to the Premium Outlet which was around $20 So, make an itinerary, look at time constraints, and then look at renting a car. We wished that we had rented a car for 2 days. Taxi and bus fares ended up being more than a 2 day car rental.

Stay @ WDW. Becca, I think the bigger question is: If you will only have had your licence for 7 months, do you really want to be driving around in a strange place? You will not have your licence until about January, 2007! Do you think that you will feel comfortable driving Florida's higways next summer? How much highway driving will you do b/t the time that you get your licence & you go to WDW? I have had my licence for decades & I avoid Florida's highways whenever I can!! But, if you really want to do it, then call some car rental companies & see what they have to say about renting to a 23 year old. I always use National in Florda but I do not know what there "minimum age" is. Obviously, that is not something that I have to worry about! All the best w/ whatever you decide. :)

We've used the disney buses, boats, monorails etc and they're great. We never rent a car.

If your primary purpose is to visit WDW things you will have to compare are somewhat higher cost of WDW hotels versus cost to rent a car - most major companies will now rent at age 21 but with a relatively high surcharge for ages 21-25 ($15-20/day) plus some require that you take the "optional" insurance. The added costs of renting a car are likely to far out-weigh the hotel costs.

Add to that hassle of driving, safety of driving in strange area for new driver, etc.

If you plan to spend a great deal of time at non-WDW properties, then it gets more complicated.

no way orlando is a city for car travel. everything is really spaced out. unless you are on disney property you need a car.
