Hmmm. South Carolina is a pretty big state, you know? Am I safe in assuming you're from the UK?

Used to take me 5-1/2 hours from exit 57 in SC on I-95 to Mount Dora if that helps.

No need to overnight unless you're leaving very late in the evening -- but I might have lunch in St. Augustine or Savannah if I were you. Both are wonderful stops all by themselves.

May I suggest you stop at a welcome center at the SC border and pick up things that look interesting? For example, you want mountains, beach, horse country, museums, plantations, nature and hiking, etc. etc.

If indeed you are from overseas, I believe I would do Charleston and environs, beach, plantations, nature hike, kayaking -- things that are different from where you live. Explore the back roads for a better flavor of the south, stop at local restaurants, check the festival schedule you can pick up at the Welcome Centers. And if you only have four days, I'd skip Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Florence, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach.

JMHO.

I would not recommend Mt. Dora. We went there last year for an overnighter, and were so disappointed, we chose to go somewhere else.
St. Augustine or Charleston would be excellent choices.

My family lives in South Carolina and I have to tell you there isn't much. Savannah GA is a wonderful town and as far as South Carolina goes, the best place to be is on Lake Murray an hour away from columbia or at Hilton Head. St Augustine is a wonderful town--gorgeous buildings and worth stopping in at, and Jacksonville,FL would be a good place to stop, too as that it is on 95, gigantic, and near the beach and 45 minutes from St. Augustine.

Lake Murray is a mud hole. No offense but freinds that live on the lake call it a mud hole.

Agree with others, hit Charleston and the Charleston beaches.

Orlando is maybe a bit over 5 hours from Orlando.

tcapp: I certainly did not recommend Mt. Dora -- simply used it as a pointer for travel times from Orlando to SC which was one of the questions from OP.

Thanks for the advice 5 hours isn't too bad a drive but we expect it to take longer considering places of interest en route. We will be leaving a cruise ship in Port Canaveral, stopping for lunch in St. Augustine, taking a look around Jacksonville and Savannah, then heading for Charleston. Sorted! Yes we are from the UK. Thanks again.
