I was in Orlando last January for a business trip but had some free time to visit the parks. There were very short lines at Magic Kingdom and no lines at all at MGM. We were there at the end of January and it was nice during the day but it did cool down at night. I thought it was a great time to visit.

We stayed at the Royal Pacific hotel and people that visited the Universal theme parks said it was great because you didn't have to wait in any lines with your room pass. It was a very nice hotel. I really like Disney but your kids are at the age where they might prefer Universal - I know my son does.

We went in January of 2003 and stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and really enjoyed it. Believe it or not, it was FREEZING while we were there (lowest temps in 15 years) and in all our pictures we're in coats, hats and scarves!! Watch mousesavers.com for good rates on Disney resorts. I've never stayed at Universal resorts so can't offer an opinion on that.

Disney is the place to stay. They have it all over Universal. More and nicer hotels to choose from. Package deals that include admission to all Disney parks and unlimited use of express pass for rides. Universal has the best rides, Hulk, Spiderman, etc.

I have stayed at both Disney and Universal. It's really unfair to compare the two because they are two completed different types of places.
As to the statement that Disney hotels are better, I totally disagree. All three or the on-site hotels at Universal are Loew's hotels and are first class all the way. There are many discounts to be had at these hotels also. The entrance tickets to Universal are a LOT LESS EXPENSIVE than Disney. I love both places, but tend to prefer Universal.
You 13 and 11 year old would love Universal. The theming is great.
Have you been to either place before?
