Orlando hotel - Kennedy Space Center
I'm planning to see the shuttle launch in May and I'm wondering about hotel recommendations. Is it possible to get a hotel that isn't completely geared towards children? I know this is Disney country, so I do expect kids to be around, but I'm wondering if relaxing by the pool is be a pipe dream. Also, I'll probably do some shopping (of course), and possibly drive out to the beach. Is Orlando the place to stay? The launch is the most important aspect of the trip – although I am aware that the event can be postponed or cancelled. Thanks for your help.

Orlando is a good 45 - 50 miles from the KSC Visitors Center. That's just over an hour's drive on a normal day - and much, much longer coming back to Orlando on a launch day. If the launch is the most important aspect, I'd try to stay closer than Orlando - try Titusville or Cocoa Beach.
Other Central Floridian posters - what say you? |
Definitely NOT Orlando. There are both options for people who like small hotels (the Inn at Cocoa Beach) or big (the Radisson Resort at the Port). And there are some other on-the-beach options in the area as well. I'd definitely second the Cocoa Beach or Titusville areas.

Hotels in Cocoa Beach and Titusville book up around launches. If you decide to stay close to KSC, do not delay making reservations.
You can get away from the amusement park crowd in Orlando, but if your motive for the trip is the launch, stay on the coast. |
Much appreciated. Just the info I was looking for considering my lack of knowledge about the area. : )

Topping this in hopes that SMac will see it - the May shuttle launch has been moved forward to May 11.

Agree with Doug_Stallings. There will be massive traffic jams on the Beachline (SR 528) (before and particularly after the shuttle launch) if you decide to stay anywhere in the Orlando area.
