Orlando, Florida in December

My mother and I will be in Orlando for 5 days in December. We plan to spend maybe 1 or 2 days in Disney. Aside from the other theme parks (Universal and SeaWorld) are there any other sights or exhibits to see for adults ?

If you don't mind a bit of a ride, Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach is fascinating.

If you will do a simple search on this web site, type in "capetownfolk" and look at the detailed answers to several posts these people have received for their lengthy trip to Florida. There are some excellent suggestions for the Central Florida area.

If you are interested in art, try the Morse Museum ( www.morsemuseum.org ) in Winter Park. It is located on Park Avenue, a great location for shopping and dining.

I second the suggestion for exploring Winter Park. And the "old" downtown area of Orlando is interesting. Of course, the space center should not be missed; it's worth the time.

Other than that, the weather could be nice enough to allow you to take a little dip in the ocean at Cocoa Beach, or at least take a barefooted stroll in the edge of the surf.

On rare occasions, the weather can be really rotten in December, ranging from cold all-day rain to downright freezing temperatures. Quite a few years ago, the temperature dropped into the 20's for about a week in central Florida, killing a great deal of the citrus crop. So although you probably won't have such an experience, just be sure to bring some layering-type clothes and a rain-proof jacket plus umbrella. Good luck.

Do NOT miss "ICE", the huge (as in bigger than life size) ice sculpture exhibit at the Gaylord Palms Hotel's Conference Center, close to Disney, across I4 from Disney marketplace.

It is visually amazing and very fun.

Here is the description on the Gaylord Palsm site but do a general internet search for more amazing pics.

hey emd,
thanks for mentioning ICE. I too am planning to be in Orlando between the 21st and the 28th of December.

Orlando at Christmas seems absolutely magical! :) It sounds like a lot of the hotels go way out for Christmas!

ttt for powerpuff and myself :D

What about the Christmas decorations?

Apart from the MK what should not be missed?

dsquared Aug 23rd, 2006 01:49 PM

JAGIRL, the Disney parks decorate like crazy. The hotels are also beautifully decorated. If you're near MK, stop by the lobby of the Grand Floridian to see the Gingerbread House and the Christmas Tree. Beautiful!

At Christmas, Disney MGM has the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights - and it is a spectacle. A crowded spectacle! Epcot has the Candlelight Processional with choir, orchestra and semi-famous narrators. MK has a separate ticketed event at night: Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

When do they traditionally start announcing Christmas events in Orlando?

Most of the websites only have info from last year.

Try the "Ice" exhibit at the Gaylord Palms. It was pretty affordable compared to the parks, and it was alot of fun.

POWERPUFF71's trip was four years ago. I think they have already returned home.
