I'll be in NYC for about 8 days, staying near 34th/3rd. I won't be cooking much of anything, but would love to pick up stuff like milk, yogurt, fruits, granola bars etc. I believe I won't have problem finding these food items from the usual supermarket chains, but does any of you know of food markets that sell only organic foods? Or better yet, markets that also have organic take-out sandwiches and salads etc? [Preferably within a 5 block radius.]

If not, which one of the supermarket chains have better organic selections? I know the usual suspects: Gristedes and D'agostino, but both are somewhat depressing-looking.

If he does not respond, there is an organic market on Third and about 16th Street. And a highly trafficked natural food store on First Ave and Tenth called Commodities East. And then there is the grand daddy of natural foods called Integral Yoga in the West Village.

By using maps.google.com you can map your hotel and then use their 'search nearby' function for organic market or whatever you need. By doing that, the closest one I see is Tri Health on Park ave. & 29th st. The nearest regular market is Food Emporium on 32 st. & 3rd ave. that will likely have most of what you want. I love to wander and stock up with things to have on hand for snacks (cheese, breads, spreads, etc) and love the flowers. You can't get much fresher than straight from the farm vendors. You'll also find sandwiches and other foods you can eat there or take away.

"Like" their Facebook list to get daily updates on what's new or arriving at the market.

I head that way on every visit because 1) I love the market and 2) it's close to my favorite store

Murray Hill doesn't exactly have an exciting selection of grocery stores of any kind. I shop at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's myself --- both near Union Square but neither within 5 blocks. But there's a health food store that has a deli counter on 3rd Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets. I'm sorry that I don't remember the name, but it's between Sarge's and the Marriott extended stay hotel on the same side of the street.

Josie's is an all-organic restaurant across the street, and it's attached to Better Burger, an organic hamburger take-out place with a few seats.

You will certainly find organic milk and yogurt at the Food Emporium or Gristede's at the corner of 32nd/3rd Avenue, but it will ordinarily be more expensive than anything similar at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's .. especially the milk though the yogurt is about the same price. You are unlikely to find any good organic produce in the area except perhaps at the Food Emporium. Most of the time the D'Agostino at the corner of 35th/3rd Avenue is really expensive and also has a pretty bad selection of everything, but it will have some organic produce, milk, and yogurt. All of these stores sell Kashi products if you want cereal and granola bars.

The pharmacy that's nearest to the Affinia Dumont between Lexington and Park also sells some organic foods and might have milk and yogurt, but they have nothing like fresh food or sandwiches.

Thank you for all your replies. It sounds like Food Emporium will be the better supermarket among the others. I do remember seeing Josie's on my previous stays in Murray Hill, but I've never ventured in.

Union Sq Greenmarket is a bit too far, esp if I only need a handful of food items. But I'll go check it out if I happen to be in that area during market days.

It's four days a week. I just love the experience. But, I like to go in winter too

As I said, it's a destination experience for me but I do like to go and stroll and see what looks good and stock up for snacks during the trip.

You asked for organic and "markets that also have organic take-out sandwiches and salads etc". It's the first thing I thought of. It's convenient to several subway lines so if you are traveling to and from and want to pop up for lunch or grab one to take along for later in the day, that's an option too.

Not fancy, but great food (IMO) and they have a good lunch menu too. (Disclaimer for those monitoring suggestions - I like the one in the UWS and would imagine the food from the Murray Hill location would be just as good)
