Oregon, Washington, Amtrak
 

Is there such a thing as being able to bring your car on a amtrak on the west coast? I know there is one on the east coast. Would love to travel to Oregon and Seattle area but would be driving there from Nevada. The thought of doing the Cascades is wonderful so any suggestions of making a trip would be great Thanks

No there are no car-trains in the west. It's really not that long a drive from Nevada.

What is your concern about driving to the west coast from Nevada? Crossing the mountains?

Besides, the AMTRAK linking west coast cities doesn't travel through the Cascade Mountains, it travels along the lowlands west of them.

Most important is WHEN is the trip.

The Coast Starlight goes over the Cascades between Chemult (US97) and Oakridge (SR 58).
To use Amtrak from Nevada use the California Zephyr boarding in Reno (or Winnemucca) and going to Sacramento. You will have a few hours from mid-afternoon until about 11PM to wander around Sacramento. The Coast Starlight heads north from Sacramento about midnight.
If you go all the way to Portland, you can rent a car there.
If you want to see Crater Lake, get off in Klamath Falls and rent your car there.
Amtrak's only Auto Train runs from Lorton Virginia to Sanford Florida.

You say Nevada . . . it is a very BIG state. Where? Reno> Las Vegas? somewhere else?

bottom line -- Amtrak really isn't a viable option to get from most parts of Nevada to Seattle . . . Even IF there were AutoTrains - which there aren't.

If you want to have your own car - driving is the only option. If you just want any car - then fly to Seattle or Portland and rent a car there.

Driving from Nevada to Oregon and Washington isn't a big deal, but if you don't want to do it you could fly to Seattle (or Portland) and rent a car.

I find it interesting that sometimes people post things and then don't check back to c what's up! Maybe this poster has but made no comment. Posting dated March 26 and it is now almost 1 month later. hmmmmmm some good ideas here too...
