Oregon Trip Report/Mystery of Blacklock Point
Husband and I just returned from first time trip to Oregon from 9/13 to 9/23. First encounter was a clear late afternoon at Ecola State Park - what a beautiful view and the Ecola Creek Lodge where we stayed was certainly conveniently close by. Thank heaven for the great weather at Ecola that afternoon because what followed was 2 full days of rain! As bad as it was pouring down, we went ahead and passed by Oswald State Park, Cascade Head and Cape Lookout hikes (VERY disappointing). Enjoyed many wonderful ocean views, the hike at Cape Sebastian, lighthouses, sand dunes, Redwoods, Harry & David plant. Brookings, Grants Pass, and Bend were sunny though. Has anybody hiked to Blacklock Point near Cape Arago? First of all, finding the trailhead was not easy. We walked the 2 miles to a beautiful beach overlook, but were baffled where a path could have led to Blacklock if anyone could clue us in as to what we did wrong!! We also could not find a sign for Eagle Creek trail at the Gorge, nor could we figure out where/what Cape Kiwanda was. When we got to Crater Lake, the ranger informed us we would probably not see the lake at all due to fog. Since I was quite upset (we were staying in Bend that nite), my husband drove us up to the north entrance where we had lunch at the Lodge and the fog managed to clear for a couple hrs. Or maybe our hike down to the lake brought us out of the mist. Driving part of the road around the lake was frightening with some snow and fog! Our last 3 days were in Portland with the first two in pouring rain! But that did not keep us from exploring the town. Our room at the Mark Spencer was small but cute and breakfast was good. We enjoyed dining at Jake's. All in all, I still enjoyed everything I saw and hated to leave such a pretty state! Thanks again to everybody who gave me their input before this trip.

Hi, thank you for posting.
Too bad you are not here now, it is hot and sunny, as was most of the summer ( except when you were here :) ) We were at the Coast last week too , at Arch Cape, it was pretty chilly but we were able to walk on the beach and wander some of the towns..Good ole PNW weather :) Hurry back! |
Thanks for the report LadyVic. We have a beach cottage in Seaside where we enjoyed the majority of the summer on the Northern Oregon Coast. Glad you enjoyed Ecola State Park, Indian Beach is great for our surfing needs! :)
Oswald West is gorgeous, too bad you missed it. Short Sands Beach is another one of our favorite surfing spots and the walk back to the beach is so fun and beautiful through the lush rain forest. ***kim*** ((f)) |
Great trip report, LadyVic.
We have been to Oregon a few times and love it. We live in Ca so we do not get to visit as often as we would like. kimamom, I read that you were on the Oregon Coast for 23 days. We tried surfing but found the water temps in the PNW to be way too cold lol. Thx. |
Hi, Lady Vic, we also just got back from OR...hopefully I will have a trip report soon. Re Cape Kiwanda: It really is not a large area. It is at Pacific City and is on what is known as the 3
Capes Loop Road. to see what it looks like, the OR state parks site has a panorama at www.oregonstateparks.org/park_180.php?md=pic It is not as scenic as some other areas, but we did see a couple of seals on the rocks and saw whales spouting close to shore. |
Forgot to mention, we stayed at four places on the coast. I guess being an southern Ohio gal, I enjoyed every inch of the ocean!

Cape Kiwanda is just a quick drive north of Pacific City. There is a HUGE dune just on the right of the beach. It is also known as "home of the dory fleet" as the boats head out to fish from here.
I disagree with aloha about it not being as scenic as other areas. You just have to climb the dune to have incredible views and scenery. If you head out towards the ocean on the dune the scenery is breathtaking! You can also watch the hang gliders as they coast off the east side of the huge dune. After you fly down the dune catching air you can stop at the Pelican Brewery for one of their own microbrewed beers and a meal. The food is very good! Maybe next time! |
