Oregon Teachers and the Ballot ?
On a previous post someone mentioned Oregon is a bad location a relocating teachers to find jobs - WHY? They said something about a Ballot.
|
Oregon's system for funding public education is all screwed up. That, coupled with the state's current high unemployment, means most school districts are struggling with budget issues. The result is that there are few teaching positions available.

My niece and nephew, both recent graduates in the Oregon higher education system, are having to move outside the state to find teaching jobs.

That's funny because my cousin just accepted a teaching job for the fall. He currently teaches in Santa Cruz and has realized that he'll never own his own home so he's packing up his family and moving to Oregon!

I thought all states had a teacher shortage?

I saw the same report on yesterday's national news. But, not true here! Besides the economy and related funding issues, another reason for few teaching jobs is the low attrition rate for teachers here. As a private sector employer, looking at their pay/benefit/retirement package, I can understand why!
