Oregon or Washington, that is the question
 

Have been several times to Oregon coast and, several years ago,to Washington coast. Want to take a two to three week trip to the coast area of one of these states.

How do they compare in terms of places to stay, both camping and other accommodations, prices, and crowds? I would like to go in April/May or September/ October of 2006.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

The best, most scenic part of the Washington coast (the northern half) is quite remote and has either a very few scattered accomodations (eg Kalaloch Lodge) or wilderness camping only (backpacking in Olympic National Park). I think the wilderness camping is fantastic but of course you have to be into that. The southern part of the Washington Coast (Ocean Shores, Long Beach) has more to offer for tourists but isn't nearly as scenic or interesting as the Oregon Coast. So, if you're looking for a great scenery plus a good variety of accomodations (car campgrounds, cottages, condos) and restaurants, town activities, etc, I'd suggest Oregon.
Of course, two to three weeks is enough time for both, unless you want to be in a single spot and relax the whole time.

As a resident of Washington who enjoys both the Oregon and Washington Coasts, I think christy1 is quite correct in her observations. The Oregon Coast does offer far more opportunities for camping and general accommodations.

Pricing would be similar, I believe, as would crowds at the two times of year you are considering. Weather might be better in Sept/Oct than April/May, the latter being perhaps more foggy and cool. But...in the Northwest, one can never tell or predict!

While I love my state of Washington I think the Oregon coast is more beautiful and easily accessible. Loads of great set-ups for camping, staying in yurts, state parks, condos on the ocean, etc. I'd aim for either May or September since April or October more likely would be cooler and possibly raining.

I too agree with the others. While the Washington coast is gorgeous, much of it is very difficult to get to and with little to no accomodation.

Oregon coast is a very beautiful too but with much easier access.
