Oregon Fall Foliage
Trying to coincide a trip to Oregon with emergence of Fall Foliage. Any significant sightings yet? If so, where and what would be a good route to see it? I am coming up H/W 5 or the coast route, but I can deviate wherever to see it. Thanks for any help.

I-5 is probably not your best bet for any sort of scenery. It's slower in parts (much slower in parts) but Highway 99 and 99W/99E are much more scenic if you can detour off of them. Of course, Hwy 101 would be better than I-5, too.

According to weather.com, fall foilage has peaked all over Oregon. I would definitely include Route 38 from Reedsport to Curtain in my search for fall colors.

Hi joe!
According to looking out the window, fall foilage is still starting in Portland lol. There are so many evergreens here, it doesn't seem like the fall we are used to ( back East) but it is lovely to walk in mild weather and have yellow and red leaves come drifting down in the parks. I would think that sooner rather than later would be a good time to get here for that trip! |
Looking out my window too, we have lots of yellow and orange colors right now. Like Scarlett says, not like back east at all, but hey, gotta take what you can get:) Our leaves are starting to drop, but it is just starting, so hopefully we can enjoy the color for a bit longer.

We just returned from Seattle via "5" and noticed how little "color" along that highway. On our way north did notice some changes out through hills on way to Tillamook --
All in all still a lovely trip.. |
Take I-5 to Medford, turn at Exit 30 onto the road to Crater Lake (62), turn right again when you get to the turnoff to Butte Falls, then turn left in Butte Fals on the road to Prospect. This brings you back to the road to Crater Lake. You will see great fall colors taking this route. You can then continue on 62 to 230 and then either go east to 97 and Bend or left back to Roseburg and I-5. Either direction is very scenic. Enjoy!

Some good routes suggested, particularly hwy 38 between I-5 and Reedsport, but I suggest not planning your route based on fall foliage, particularly if you've not been to/through Oregon. I'd choose a drive up Oregon's coast over the best of Oregon's fall foliage every time. If you happen to see some nice color along the way, count it a bonus.

Thanks everybody. We have been to Oregon often. Just another trip to an area we love and I am trying to coincide it with some color.
I talked to a ranger on the Fall Foliage Hotline for Oregon (yes, there is one) today and he thought we were a week away from peak foliage. But, I will still log in for actual sightings. Thanks again. We will return via the Coast Road. |
I was just on the McKenzie Hwy this weekend and we saw a lot of color in the trees and vine maple- very beautiful - except for the fact that it was pouring rain most of the day.
We didnt let that stop us though - and hiked from Sahalie Falls to Carmen Resovoir and back- and then soaked in the hotsprings at Belknap ( also in the pouring rain) It was fun though - cant live in Oregon and have a little rain stop you |
Thanks Sunbum. The route along the McKenzie River is in our itinerary. Sounds as if we had better come posthaste. The Rangers at the Oregon Hotline had told me last Thursday to wait ten days for good foliage. Looks as if that has accelerated. Fortunately, we are flexible.
I was told (by the Ranger) that the East Side of the Cascades from Sisters North was good for foliage. Any information on this area? Thanks again. |
Dont know about the area around Sisters -
but did hear it was snowing on the pass this am - was supposed to melt though- I think you better be getting out here |
Were on our way. Any East Cascades foliage sightings?

I just did the Butte Falls run last weekend and it was amazing though it looked like another week and it might be even better.
Highway 42 from I-5 to the coast is also a a great drive this time of year. |
Thanks Panhandle.
