Oregon Coast
Will be driving up the Oregon coast (from Calif to Washington headed for Vancouver BC) for the first time and don't want to miss a thing. Please share with me the wonderful sights I can expect to see and the places I should make certain to add to my itinerary.

Don't miss the redwood forests in Humboldt County CA - allow time to get out and walk around in them - for me it was a downright spiritual experience. Also be sure to drive in to see the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It has to be seen to be believed and appreciated. Regrettably, my trip through the area took me no further north than Newport Oregon, but I'm told that the rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula in WA are also a must see. Have fun and prepare yourself for some of the most spectacular and unspoiled scenery in the world!

Bannon Oregon - great walking beach with tidepools and rocks. Lots of hotels, esp. up o the cliffs. but a little adventuring in the old part of town will turn up a great restaurant (nothing fancy) w/a couple of rooms to let upstairs.
If they are still open, we enjoyed the Oregon Caves - a northeast detour out of Crescent City, cA - stayed at the Chateau in the Park, but I belive the whole thing is only seasonal. The Chateau is old and rehabbed and quite a delight.
And Oregon Dunes is a must. They are very neat. I also believe you can take boat trips of various kinds up the Rogue River, weather permitting. We got rained out the time we intended to do it. Happy driving. It's beautiful.

This is what I would have to say: Astoria, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Newport, Yachats and Bandon are the nicest towns by far on the coast. The ones to avoid are Rockaway Beach, Seaside, Lincoln City and places like Garabaldi for sure. Pacific City is also a miss IMO. Love those LONG beaches in Oregon.

Everybody seems to like the Oregon Coast, me included. And there are some big beaches as well as spectacular surf.
But, I noticed very few people trying to swim when we walked along the beaches.
I guess the conditions are too cold.
I know they were for me.
We spent the night at a motel in Yachats that was right out on the rock. Watching the waves pound against the rocky headlands was fascinating.

My husband and I just returned from a 4 day trip to Portland, 2 nites were spent on the coast.
Unfortunately, the weather was overcast, drizzly, rainy, etc...95% of the time. The next time I'll be sure to check the almanacs to see when the dry season might be. We stayed at an ocean-front condo (Hallmark Resort) in Newport and it was wonderful. In-room fireplace, indoor pool and jacuzzi, kitchenette, 2 tvs, VCR, etc.
My ONLY negative during the trip was that during a morning walk on the beach, the water was approx. 100 ft. away, and as we turned to walk back to the hotel I was knocked down by a "sneaker wave" and ended up in frigid water up to my chest! A shocking and frightening experience. AND just about 10 ft. away a big log washed up--which I have now read happens a lot and they've been known to kill people.
Returned yesterday to our calm Atlantic beaches here in SC...hope you have a wonderful trip.
