Oregon Coast Trip - Just the Facts
 

First, thanks to the Fodorites who made suggestions for this impromptu (for me anyway) trip.

Itinerary - 4 nts Manzanita; 3 nts Yachats; 2 nts Yamhill

Southwest RT, SLC to Portland = good airfare 3 wks in advance $235 non-stop (yeah!)

Enterprise economy car - 10 days = $142 pretty good deal

Oregon gas prices - about the same as UT. Just can't get used to people popping up out of nowhere and pumping your gas FOR you....

vrbo home in Manzanita - perfect, perfect town and lovely, comfy, charming home 1 blk from the main street - $150/ nt (pre-Mem Day weekend rates), 2 BR 2 BA, hot tub & deck, remodeled beach craftsman. Let me know if you want the listing number, I would go back in a heartbeat. Owner wonderful to deal with.

vrbo home in Yachats - another complete winner! A Zen house - sit in the Japanese soaking tub in the master bath and watch the whales in the cover below. $140 / nt (pre-mem day weekend rate), 2 BR, 2 BA, small deck, wall of glass in the great room. Also recommend. Property Manager very helpful, let me borrow a hairdryer and delivered it to the door.

Cannon Beach - nice beach, town too big and too touristy. Shops full of cheap tourist junk imports. One very nice gallery - Firedragon.

Astoria - interesting, fun to see the Victorians.

Newport - nice, small aquarium. Very scary giant Japanese crabs. Grow to 13 foot leg span, like a horror movie!

Luna Sea, Yachats - amazing fish tacos, great fresh salmon for dinner grilling, hole in the wall type place, friendly owners

Bridgewater Grill, Florence - wonderful crab cakes in a fun historic bldg w/ great atmosphere

Bread and Ocean, Manzanita - excellent, only open for dinner Fri, Sat and Sun. Res required, very tiny place w/ few tables, excellent service too.

Hideaway Hill B&B, Yamhill (Willamette Valley) - below my average experience, very remote, a bit dusty. One couple who were multiple return guests were a bit odd. Did not enjoy.

Mem Weekend Wine Tasting in the Dundee Hills area - fun, very busy, some big winners discovered = Brick House; Ayers; Ken Wright. Loosers too, but we won't talk about those.

I only had lunch in Astoria and need to seach out the name of the place - it was fairly good, in a historical home, nice outdoor patio. I'll check.

Depoe Bay is VERY scenic, great photo ops. I didn't spend time there as it was raining during my drive south to Yachats.

Book ahead, both seem quite popular, with good reason.

Sounds like a great time! There are many good places to dine in Astoria. Bridgewater Bistro, Drina Daisy, Ship Inn, Bowpicker for fish and chips, Clemente's, Silver Salmon Grille and T Paul's Urban Cafe are a few of our favorites. If you like Italian food, don't miss Fulio's! ***kim*** ((#))

Yes, it is very good! We love the Salmon Supreme there. We were in Astoria today and had some really yummy clam chowder at Rogue Public Ale House. If you like bakery goodies, go to Peter Pan Market. I had some amazing Raspberry Rhubarb pie there today. ***kim*** ((#))
