Oregon coast trip at the end of March
 

We are doing a PCH trip from Washington down the coast of California. I wanted to know how I should pack - especially shoes for walking. I think that I have read it will be misty and rainy so I was planning on layers. Also, we need restaurant recommendations for Yachats and Gold Beach (unfortunately, Tu Tu Tun's restaurant is closed at that time) TIA!

We did a similar trip the beginning of May last year and it was cool, we are from New England and we still thought the weather was cool. We hit rain a couple of times but it was light and didn't last long. It was snowing in the mountains. You need to bring a rain jacket and dress in layers. The trip is beautiful and my favorite of any I have done. The Oregon Coast is my absolute favorite. Have a great time.

The northern Oregon Coast is my absolute favorite part of the coast. Where are you staying in Gold's Beach? The Sand n' Sea is a nice oceanfront hotel.

The Stephanie Inn is very nice in CB. Ecola State Park and Indian Beach are must-sees in the area. If you surf or boogey-board bring a wet suit, waves are great at Indian Beach.

Seaside is a nice place to walk the prom along the ocean and great touristy shops there. There is a beautiful, high-rise hotel that was built there the past couple of years. I have to get the name of it. It's a time-share place. Anyone know the name of it?

Astoria is a must-see. The Maritime Museum, Flavel House, Fort Clatsop and the Astor Column are also must-sees. www.oldoregon.com Take the trolley along the riverfront and have lunch at the Cannery Cafe. Fulio's is my favorite dinner place in downtown Astoria. The Silver Salmon Grille is also not to be missed.

The weather will most-likely be rainy so bring your raincoat and umbrella. Any specific questions about the northern coast, I would be happy to advise you!! You will love the coast, there is just nothing to be compared!! We are headed over there in April for 10 days! Can't wait! ***kim***

some great answers, kim.... but tifany8 didn't ask any of those questions. and seriously, most people who drive right thru astoria miss very little of what the oregon coast really has to offer.

tifany8, you know to dress in layers, with the outermost waterproof. the same would be true for your feet, especially if you plan to walk beaches.

Uuhhh, have you visited Astoria lately? It's an excellent place for those interested in history, Victorian homes, beautiful scenery, fishing and the Columbia River. One of THE most interesting places on the coast, IMO.

Oh, Tifany8 try Leroy's Blue Whale in Yachats. It's a great mom and pop type place with pretty good home-cooking!

Comfortable tennis shoes will be good for walking, and don't forget your flip=flops for the beach! Between my daughter and myself, I think we have accumulated at least ten pairs from various surf shops on the coast! Have a great trip! ***kim*** :)

yes to the astoria question, kim. my point is that most people don't travel to the oregon coast out of their interest in history, victorian homes, fishing, or the columbia river. beautiful scenery, okay... but compared to the rest of the coast, astoria is not really noted for that either.

note also that tifany8 is traveling in march. nothing worse than wet, sandy tennis shoes. flip-flops are definitely not the call either....

now, can we give tifany8 some help with gold beach restaurant recommendations? my only suggestion would be Spinners, but it's been a few years.

We are going to be stay in Seaview, Washington and then heading down the coast to stay in Yachats. Then the next day, we are traveling to Gold Beach to stay at Tu Tu Tun.

I sort of agree that flip flops are out for March on the beach, but I do need something that I can wear. Since I would probably freeze in water shoes, I probably have to find so kind of boot. Yuck, I hate packing big items!

I'll look into the restaurant recommendations. Are there any others?

Are you staying at the Shelburne Inn in Seaview WA? You will love it if you are. Don't miss their four-star restaurant, The Shoalwater. They have the best pan-fried oysters. I would suggest a stop at Fort Stevens State Park. The wreck of the Peter Iredale is very interesting.

It is a windy beach, so bring your wind-breaker and kites! There are many great bike paths to ride there and also Coffenberry Lake is very pretty.

I often walk barefoot on the beach in the Spring. but I know that's not for everyone! I hope you have some sunny days! We had a great sunny beach day in Seaside in December so you never know!

I visited some family last August who live in Olympia, WA. We went down to the Oregon coast,my 1st time, and stayed the weekend in Cannon Beach. It is a wonderful,little beach town that is not commercailized. You will see no McDonalds or Pizza Huts and no Holiday Inns or Best Westerns. I loved the atmosphere of the town. We stayed at the SurfSand. Haystack Rock is so pretty especially at sunset! It is a favorite spot for my cousin and they go there quite often. Stop by if you are going that direction, you will be glad you did.

I agree Kristin, CB is a wonderful place. Have lunch at Mo's. The views from the inside and out on the patio are beautiful. I like their peppered salmon and their homemade cobblers are very good. Clam chowder is OK, but it is very think. Mo's is a tradition for us when we're headed over to the Seaside/Astoria area. ***kim*** :)

kim, you gotta get out more.... mo's doesn't even make the top ten in cannon beach. in fact, i can't think of a place in cb where the food's not better. yes, the view is nice, but it's compensation for poor food quality.

next time you're in cb, try the wayfarer down the road towards town. it's also ocean-view (though not quite ocean-front), and the food's MUCH better than mo's.

We take our gang of teens to Mos, uuhhhhh. They like it there and it's very affordable. I may try the Wayfarer but the Bistro and Stephanie Inn are tops on my list for our couple's meals.

Give up our traditional stop at Mo's, neeevah!! LOL ***kim*** I just wish the wait wasn't so long there. In August the lines are backed into the parking lot. Worth the wait, tho! :)

Will definitely check out the Stephanie Inn in April when we have more time. Also want to try John Nelson's Kalypso which moved from CB to Seaside recently. Does anyone have any opinions on this place? Good or bad? ***kim***
