Oregon coast gridlock problem
How many of you Oregonians agree that the Oregon Coast should be selected as one " the "1 summer vacation bottlenecks in the US"
(see previous posting about gridlocks) I personally have never experienced a traffic problem at the Oregon coast unless there has been a serious car accident - suppose area around Cannon Beach could get pretty busy - but still not terrible in my opinion |
I drove up rte 1 from Northern CAlif last summer in June and it was great. nada gridlock
|
I saw that item on this morning's news as well. They were listing the worst traffic bottlenecks for this 4th of July weekend. I was a bit surprised by it also, feeling maybe they were attributing it to the two-lane highway along the Oregon coast? Interesting...
The next shot on our local news was the traffic jam between LA and Santa Barbara heading north...yikes! I live on the CA central coast near Pismo Beach, and the news said this will be the busiest weekend EVER in central coast history. I see so many beautiful weekends in Sep/Oct here where the beach is practically empty, and that's when we come out to play! :) Our plans? Stay home and put a tri-tip on the bbq and relax with some of the neighbors. Where ever you're at or going, enjoy and have a safe and sane weekend! |
Sunbum--I agree with the report, but at least it is not constant. The weekdays are usually fine...however trying to drive anywhere near Cannon Beach on the weekend can be totally insane. Just this morning as I was driving into Portland, the radio station was talking about this. They were hilarious saying how one had better leave Portland now in hopes of making it to the coast by Monday, lol! At least everyone is keeping their sense of humor with this:)

Perhaps it is all that traffic back and forth from some town in Ca , trying to get to all the restaurants in Oregon in a weekend?
|
Scarlett--You may be on to something there, lol!
|
They must be talking about the "gridlock" from where 18 hits the coast, and south through Lincoln City. It only took me a couple times of taking that route to realize that, outlet malls be damned, I wasn't doin' that again! Apparently the rest of you here are a little smarter than I....
|
Beachbum--Growing up in Salem, I learned that I think before I even learned to drive, lol!
|
But even given that there are some traffic problems - especially Cannon Beach area - do you really think it qualifies for #1?
I dont think so - |
I don't think so, either, sunbum. And they shouldn't even include Cannon Beach because that's off 101.
|
After living on the coast for 10 + years I would have to say no. There is some problems with slow moving traffic up 101 during the summer. There is really no place to pass a slow moving RV so cars tend to stack up pretty quick. They have pull offs but a lot of people dont seem to use them. There was talk a while back about building a secondary road up the coast for truck traffic and leave 101 to the tourists and such. It would be a huge undertaking though and as fast as we seem to get things done on the coast flying cars are closer to being finished than that!
After having been on the road to Hana on Maui 101 is nothing in comparison. |
The report included the roads to the coast, which I think are worse than 101. At least on 101 people are stopping at the various points, but on the roads over there really isn't anything to stop for and it gets so congested.
