I like the Yachats area better than Waldport -
Not sure where the house in Waldport that you found in located but there is a housing area on a spit of land that has had a lot of trouble with erosion and they get a lot of wind - some people have tractors to scoop sand out of driveways because it gets so bad - so check out where the house is located

but Waldport, Newport, Yachats - all close together

Yeah, mms, I've taken 99w through Tigard from I-5 and also cut over from Tualatin-Sherwood Road (that's actually the exit BEFORE North Wilsonville - it's just the "Tualatin" exit from I-5.) My experience has been that 99w traffic through Tigard isn't really so bad if you don't go at rush hour, and Tualatin-Sherwood Road can be frustratingly slow even though it isn't due to traffic backups. Lots of slow trucks seem to use that route. I have gone both ways a few times and don't think there's any real clear advantage unless you're avoiding 99w at rush hour.

There are several other alternatives to get out to highway 18. One is to go down I-5 toward Salem and take OR 22 west to 18 and skip McMinnville. While this route really doesn't save any time and the I-5 portion isn't very scenic, highway 22 is very pretty driving west from there. And you skip entirely the bottleneck on 99w through Dundee, which CAN be miserable any time of day. In fact, you'll probably skip pretty much all traffic going this route; no real time savings but less frustrating for sure.

Another scenic alternative - but which adds 30-60 minutes to the drive - is to get to McMinnville by taking US 26 (Sunset Highway) west from Portland and exiting toward Forest Grove and picking up OR 47 south to McMinnville. This route winds you through the small towns of Yamhill and Carlton and takes you through pretty farm country.

Andrew--I live in Sherwood, so know T-S road all too well, lol! If you time it right, it is ok...but I wouldn't suggest it to a visitor. The N Wilsonville exit is the easiest, and the one we use daily. I go to Mac quite often, and Dundee is hit or miss too. Weekends it is always backed up. But like yesterday morning, except for the school zone, it was a breeze, and even that wasn't backedup, just the 20mph limit for a block or so. During the week, it definitely depends on whether going S or N, with rush hour. So many people living in Mac commuting to downtown now.

We were in Oceanside today, this is a very pretty area of the coast and much less populated than Cannon Beach and Seaside. The scenery is gorgeous in this area! We had dinner at Roseanna's Cafe and caught a beautiful sunset at Rockaway Beach. ***kim*** ((#))

FYI (in case anyone else is having trouble getting one at their local AAA) -- just received my Oregon Coast tour map from AAA (by mail -- it is dated 9/06 also). Looks great! Thanks for the tip.

Great! I was at local Oregon AAA the other day and asked for a new Tour Map and it too was still from 9/06 so I gave it back - just wanted to make sure it's the latest!
