Oregon Coast driving tour suggestions

Interested in a scenic drive along the Oregon coast late August/early Sept. Appreciate any suggestions for route and lodging.

Much of our coast is scenic. Not sure where your are starting, etc, but here is one route that we take often. We head over from Portland to Cannon Beach. From there, head south on 101 and stop along the way at various viewpoints and beaches. Manzanita is a nice little town along the way. In Tillamook, cut over onto hwy 6 along the Wilson River, back towards Portland.

Another nice scenic drive is the three capes loop. Go north to south so that you have easy access on/off the highway for the various places to stop.

Again, this is all without knowing where you are starting from, how long you have, etc.

mms's suggestions are great -- my personal favorite is the southern most quarter and from about 20 miles south of Newport through Tillamook via the 3-Capes Scenic Byway.

The stretches of 101 with the most ocean views are from Brookings to Port Orford and from just north of Florence to Lincoln City.

The towns from Newport to Cannon Beach have more hotels and restaurants because they are closer to the inland population centers of Eugene, Salem, and Portland.

My favorite places to stay on the coast are Cannon Beach, Yachats, and Newport.
