Maybe Diamond Lake would be a good option. It seems like any other route besides just straight up and back on I-84 is going to be some long driving days. It looks like all the roads east-west in Oregon are "scenic" and very slow going.

I would be happy with a stop overnight at either Crater Lake or Bend. Need to spend some more time with Mapquest.

enzian, my nephew is now going to Boise State so I may stop off for a short visit on the way up.
