Oregon coast advise

We are leaving Portland tomorrow and heading south along the coast. Have two days and will be happy to hear your recommendations. After the coast we are going to Crater lake probably through Eugene. Thank you for your help.

How far south are you going eventually? Returning to Portland?

I would spend the night in Newport. Stay close to the Nye Beach area. Have dinner or lunch at the Local Ocean in the Old Town area.

Stop at Yaquina Head lighthouse where there are some nice trails, views.

My favorite beach is between Newport and Florence- Heceta Head also known as Devils Elbow. It is a nice little cove with an easy trial up to the lighthouse keepers house and lighthouse.

If want to try some Oregon wines, check out the Noble Estate tasting room.

Florence is a cute little town so stop there. And just south of Florence is Honeyman State Park where you can go and play on the sand dunes.

There is a great Website ( and magazine). The Oregon Coast Mile by Mile. Might br helpful.

The drive from Depoe Bay to the Sea Lion Caves offers many great ocean views, delightful towns, and other attractions.

Were I you, I would drive to Cannon Beach and explore Ecola State Park, which is just north of that town. Then I would drive as far south as Reedsport and from thetr drive to Crater Lake via 38, 138, I-5, and 138 again.

This drive from Portland (without detours) is about 425 miles. If you prefer to drive through Eugene, the distance is about the same.

There is a lot to see along the way. Some of our favorites are Otter Crest and Yaquina Head (with lighthouse), which are between Depoe Bay and Newport. South of Newport we like to stop at Seal Rock (south end of parking lot), Cape Perpetua, and the Sea Lion Caves (if we are traveling with visitors and there are sea lions in residence).

Thank you for your advises.

Hay 138 between Roseburg and Crater Lake is very scenic with many waterfalls to see. Some are just a short walk from parking lot, others a decent hike. My favorite is Watson Falls.

Thank you again. We defenetly would take your suggestion to skip Eugene and go by hay 138 to crater lake. We think we will spend the first night in Newport; and the second near reed sports or Florance or even farther on hay 138 and then go to crater lake and go back to Medford for the third night cause we are flying next morning to LA. Sounds reasonable?

If you enjoy wine tasting, the Hillcrest winery just a 10 min drive from Roseburg is a unique place to visit. Wines only available for purchase at the tasting room.

Visited recently and enjoyed very much.

Thank you sunbum1944. We will try to get there. Do you think it is better to look for a hotel at rose burg instead of at Reedsport?

sunbum1944 Sep 25th, 2015 08:43 AM

I don't know much about Reedsport - have only driven through, but I don't think there is much there.

I would choose Roseburg.

Thank you again. Just came from dinner at local ocean seafood. Was very good. We also though off roseburg.
