Thanks for the tip, Beachbum. Saving Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge for the last day would save some time.
We'll keep the trip going south from Troutdale. We just want to see the beautiful sites unique to the Oregon coastline. We are used to warm water and white sand beaches with no cliffs, rocky shores, or tidal pools. We won't be swimming anywhere since we know BIG BLUE is always cold water. Any suggestions on places to eat along the coast? We like seafood, and I'm told crab is popular. Our preference is good food at a fair price without having to get dressed up. |
Between Crater Lake and Roseburg, check into Steamboat Inn, its beside the Umqua River and is a beautiful place to stay.
There is also the Prospect Inn in the little village of Prospect. The rooms in the hotel are B&B type rooms and behind the hotel are more motel like rooms. Have stayed at the Prospect several times and enjoyed it- fabulous breakfasts and they will make you a lunch to take along for the day if want. |
I'm most familiar with Cannon Beach area eateries, chadwel, but can offer these few suggestions along your route.
If you do end up in Cannon Beach around lunch time, Wayfarer would be a good choice. Best seafood selection in town, and pretty well done. For ultra casual, Ecola Seafood & Restaurant. On the Three Capes Scenic Loop, Roseanna's in Oceanside; the quintessential Oregon coast diner. Food is really nothing to write home about, but the view is. Otis Cafe, a few miles north of Lincoln City, has been a favorite for years. Whether for breakfast or lunch, show up early or be prepared to wait. It's worth it. If for no other reason, stop by to pick up a pie, marionberry if it's available. I should also say something about Mo's, a local five-restaurant chain. Their food isn't that great either, but you might enjoy a visit to the original restaurant on the bayfront in Newport. A visit!! Not sure, but I think you'll find better food at Local Ocean there. |
Go south at least to Bandon--much nicer than Coos Bay. If you are going to Crater Lake in June, you need to check that the highway to the north entrance is open off of hwy 138--sometimes it doesn't open until early July! Otherwise you can drive from Bandon to Roseburg and up 138 to Crater Lake (alternatively you can go around to the south entrance via hwy off 138 or up through Medford) Bandon to Roseburg takes about 1 3/4 hours and is an easy drive. Roseburg to Crater Lake is 2 hours, assuming north entrance is open. Beautiful country so enjoy!
