Oregon Coast
We will be doing an RV trip from Vancouver, BC down the Oregon Coast during the week of Sept 6-13. We have no timeline, other than needing to be back by the 13th.
Any 'Must-Sees', festivals, events, stops, or RV park suggestions would be great! Thanks!! |
I think Ecola State Park and the Columbia River Gorge are both must-sees in the area and Cannon Beach is a fun little town to visit.
|
I agree with Don. Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park and Oswald West were the highlights.

Ahhhh you are going to be at the coast during some of the most beautiful time!
Oregon state parks are very nice and offer different amenities. There are often acivities or talks in the evenings. While things are going to be a bit slower, reservations would still be advisable. Here is a website www.oregonstateparks.org/searchpark.php I really like Astoria, there is lots to do and see and learn. There is a good maritime museum, great old houses, Fort Clatsop. The state park is also the busiest in the state but very nice. Tillamook Cheese Factory is fun - get some ice cream! Lincoln City has an outlet mall and a casino (if you like those). Newport is my personal favorite, has 2 aquarium/learning centers, a fun downtown to wander through and great beaches for walking. South Shore is the state park there and I have stayed there and enjoyed it, good beach access. There is also a state park just north of Newport (Beverly Beach), it is pretty but very shady and dark. I prefer to have a little more sun and warmth but other people love it. Florence is nice too with a downtown and sand dunes. You can rent a 4wheeler or take a dune tour. You go inland from there to Bandon. Bandon has a great state park - stayed there last year. A fun downtown and a cheese factory. I have also heard the animal park near there is good. It will be close to cranberry time I think so there may be some festivals around that. Gold Beach has the Rogue and not much else. I recommend the jet boats if you have time, the longest tour is best for excitement and pretty views. This is an overview, as you get a more detailed itinerary put it up so we can give more suggestions. Enjoy! |
Your going to have a great trip no matter where you go. I live on the coast and my favorite towns on the coast are...Cannon....Newport...Bandon. I also never hear to much about Cape Arago highway on this board but it is a beautiful place to stay. It is out of Coos Bay and dead ends up the coast (I guess most people tend to stay on Hwy 101) Shore Acres State Park is on my list of must see places on the coast. Bastendorf park(on Cape Arago Hwy. has nice rv facilities and you can listen to the ocean as you go to sleep. The drive between Florence and Newport is as spectacular as it gets in Oregon.Newports waterfront is a nice way to spend part of a day wandering through the shops(same with Bandon and Florence also. There is a couple of festivals the time you will be there...one is the Bandon "Cranberry Festival" which I believe is the 13th -15th. I have been to this one and it is fun.(Sand castle contests..cookoffs...boths with local cratfs) The other is in Florence "Chowder,Blues and Brews" I haven't been this one so I can't offer up much info. I did do a search on both festivals on yahoo search and came up with alot of info. Another idea would be the mail boats that go up the Rogue River out of Gold Beach if you happen to make it that far!If I can help anymore I would be more than happy to do so! Have fun!

We stayed in FLorence for a couple of days last summer. Visited the Sand dunes and took a dune buggy ride -lots of fun.
There is a state park just south of FLorence at the sand dunes where you can park the RV - I think that would be a great place to spend at least one night. |
The state park bigtyke is talking about is called Jesse Honeyman State Park- one of our all time favorite campgrounds! Families from all over talk about staying at this one for generations. We live in Washington and will heading down next week for our 6th time!
