Oregon and the Coast
 

I am thinking of going to Oregon in possibly September or October.<BR><BR>I would like to go to Oregon (see the Ducks play) and then maybe cut across to Florence and head to Seaside then Portland.<BR><BR>Firstly, in Sept or Oct, is the weather likely to be extreme (Rain/Snow etc)?<BR><BR>And secondly how long should I give as a min. and max. to do this journey?<BR><BR>Any help would be greatly appreciated.<BR>

It can rain at any time in Oregon, but September is often the best month on the coast. October is more likely to see rain, but the storms tend to wash through and then you'll have sun for awhile. Most of the duck games this year were night games so I would assume that you would not head for Florence until the next day. You could do the trip you are thinking of in one day, but of course you don't want to do that. One of our favorite places to stay just north of Florence is in Yachats a small but charming town. We usually stay at the Fireside there, but there are several motels and B&Bs there.<BR>I have heard that the Adobe is not one of the better ones though. You'll want to take your time along the route and stop at all the parks along the way. A good place for chowder is Mo's which has several locations all along the coast. Enjoy your trip. Go Ducks!

You are coming at the most beautiful time of the year. Early Sept is still warm, with cool evenings. October it does tend to start raining, but as mentioned on the coast the rain moves quickly. The coast is windy so rain clothes are better than umbrellas for rain. You should not have any snow. Layers work best. <BR><BR>The trip from Eugene to Florence takes just over an hour on pretty good road. Hwy 101 to Seaside will be curvy and slow. Lots of wonderful places to stay all along the route, even a lighthouse. In Newport there is the Oregon Coast Aquarium - world class - with a walk through ocean and wonderful jellyfish displays. Very fun and educational. The Hatfield Marine Science Center is there too, donation only, very educational. Those could be a full day in Newport. Newport is also a commercial fishing village - the docks are open and you can walk along the fishing boats, and see some sea lions up close in downtown. Florence has a cute downtown with little shops, so does Newport. Seaside is busy, with many activities and things to do. <BR><BR>Portland of course has lots of things to do and places to see. I would recommend 3-4 days if you have the time. While the distance isn't far the roads are slow. Do stop of many of the parks and pullouts. The Oregon coast is beautiful and you'll be seeing the prettiest part.<BR><BR>I don't know about Duck tickets but Beaver tickets are selling out very early so it is good you are planning now. The Ducks should have a new stadium too!<BR><BR>Have a nice visit in beautiful Oregon!

I was in Eugene a couple of years ago in October and it was warm and sunny one day and raining the next. Not cold though.<BR><BR>Is the Fireside good, Glenda? Any other recommendations for places to stay on the coast?

The Fireside is fine but it used to have a much better view before the owners built the Overleaf Motel right next door which blocks the great ocean view now from most of the rooms. The Overleaf has the great views and is only 3 or so years old, very nice accomidations....and of course quite a bit more spendy then the Fireside so it depends on what is important to you. Just to the south of these 2 is the Adobe and like the lady above wrote, it's bad news....it's good days were decades ago and the staff is rock bottom when it comes to service.

Gosh, I just love the Oregon Coast and Yachats is now my favorite!<BR><BR>I also stayed at the Fireside and really enjoyed it. They have great off-season rates (beginning Sept. 15, I think), and are super pet friendly.<BR><BR>I guess some of the rooms have the view obscured by the Overleaf, But there are still a whole block of rooms that have great views. I was just there this past Sept. I love the sound of the rocks crashing, just several feet from my balcony!<BR><BR>Rock Park Cottages have really low weekly rates off season as well; w/kitchens, fireplaces, etc. But very 'rustic'.<BR><BR>Have a great trip!
