Orchid at Mauna Lani-Big Island

Has anyone heard about or seen any construction going on at the Orchid at Mauna Lani on the Big Island? If so, is it noisy at the hotel? Any services different because of it? Do you know the construction schedule? We are planning a trip to the Big Island in late August of 2002.

Also considering the Outrigger Waikoloa. Any thoughts on that hotel?

Thanks!

Aloha Kristin,

We stayed at the Orchid several years ago, so I can't comment on current construction. It is a beautiful resort on the Kohala Coast and we were very happy there. You might want to do a search for more recent experiences.

Our good friends our staying at the Outrigger Waikoloa this week! The location is fantastic for this hotel, since it is right on A-Bay (a beautiful, natural beach with lots of activities.) It is also next door to the Hilton Waikoloa which has Dolphin Quest, and across the street from the Kings Shops with Roys restaurant and a food court for more reasonable dining options. I'll let you know what there experience was like.

You really can't go wrong with either choice. I would think the rates might be better at Outrigger, but that's just a guess.

Happy planning!

We stayed at the Orchid last year and really enjoyed it. The rooms were nice, the restaurants were great. It had a great beach area with snorkel equipment which you could check out. The fish and turtles we saw right there in the bay area were amazing.
There were a lot of families with children, but not so much that it was too loud.
We enjoy staying at upscale hotels and this one definitely was up there with the Ritz or Four Seasons.

....maybe because the Orchid was a Ritz Carlton (originally) that went under. Now a Sheraton.
