Opening of Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park won't be delayed

This is great news...initially the plowing of the GTTS Road was going to be delayed a few weeks because of cutbacks caused by the sequestration. It's great to see they've been able to figure out a solution to keep the plowing on schedule. The GTTS Road connects the east and west side of Glacier National Park and is one of the most scenic drives in the country. Many people who planned an early visit to Glacier could have been impacted by the delay.

I plan on being there the last week of July. Surely, it will be open by then.

The latest the GTTS Road opened was July 13 in 2011 - after record-setting snowfalls that winter. Some of the higher elevation trails we hiked that year (Hidden Lake Overlook, HIghline Trail), still had snow in late August. It usually opens around the last week in June if all goes as planned.

Snowplowing GTTS road is due to start April 1. We are having a very mild winter with little snow in the lower elevations and normal snow in higher elevations. The road definetly will not open until June 21 due to construction. Weather permitting, it will open as schedule.

When we were there early last August GTTS Road was long open.

However, there was a dangerous sloped snow field near the end of the Grinnell Glacier hike. The ranger wasn't permitted to go beyond the snack spot.

We saw a few people who went by them selces further along but they decided not to try that snowfield.

Apparently it was blasted a day or so after we left Many Glacier.
