"Open Water"--Has anyone else seen it?
DH and I saw "Open Water" last night--talk about my worst nightmare brought to life on the big screen! The movie was good, but painful to watch.
For those of you that don't know what it's about...a couple gets left behind by their scuba diving excursion boat, and the movie chronicles what happens to them. (Which I won't mention here because I don't want to spoil it)! Needless to say, it's terrible to think of being stranded in the ocean. I doubt the diving industry is too happy about this movie. Even though I know that safeguards are in place, I've never had any desire to go diving in "open water" just for fear of this happening. Seeing a dramatization of it just solidified that for me! Plus it's loosely based on a true story, so just knowing that freaks me out. Has anyone here had a "close call" with something like this? Anyone almost get left behind on an excursion? |
My two sons, both of whom love to body board, etc. also love really scary movies but refuse to go see this one because they'd probably never go in the ocean again!

I do want to see it.
A couple of months ago, NBC's Today Show had a diver on who had been left behind off in the Pacific ocean off of California's coast. A ship with boyscouts was going by and one of the kids saw him in the water. That's how he was rescued after spending 5 hours in the water. |
yes i want to see this!
of course, i still watch Jaws once a year and think it's a classic. |
I saw that on the Today show too, Caribtraveler, amazing story. And the one boy who spotted him and actually acted on what he saw is to be highly commended. If I remember correctly, the boy wasn't sure what he had seen in the water, trusted his instincts and training and saved the diver.

For those that aren't aware....
The movie was based loosely on an actual event that took place in Queensland, Australia in 1998 off the Great Barrier Reef. |
I want to see this movie, I've heard so much about it. Ebert (Ebert & Roeper) said he was so affected by it he had to walk around for awhile in the hallway after he saw it just to calm down. I've always gone snorkeling and the fear was far back in my mind about seeing a shark but it didn't stop me. In Tahiti, our guide fed a really really small one that was a couple of feet long and I was fine. I'd be worried about going to parts of Australia or other areas where they have big agressive ones. Anyways glad to hear the movie was good.

atilla: I was a bit bummed that the Today Show didn't have the boy on. Did you notice that the diver was still looking a little pissed? I guess I would be too!
|
Oh yes, pissed would be an understatement. I'm kind of surprised that story didn't get more press coverage than it did, maybe I just didn't happen to catch it on anything else. Can just imagine the lawsuit going on there! Yes, the boy most certainly shoulda been on the show.

I've wanted to see this, but now you all have me running a bit scared. My husband and I are both divers and I'm afraid we may not get back in the water after seeing this. Eeek!

Going to Kauai in 130 mo' days so I will not be seeing it.
But I did go into a "moviepooper" website and found out what happened. A great white just took an abalone diver near Ft Bragg a few days ago. It is still a wild world. |
