Ooopsy An Earthquake!
 

Hi, I was just looking around on the Europe threads and all of a sudden the earth shook! Not my personal earth but the whole Earth!
I wonder where it was centered, pretty strong and rolling motion.

I know I know, not the whole Earth just a part of it.

SeaUrchin - I left it, also. Pretty strong. I live north of San Diego, they are saying that is was around a 5.5 or 6 centered east of San Diego in the Anza Borrego desert. It was felt all the way to LA. Good thing it was not in a populated area.

Meant to say - I felt it also. So far have only had 1/2 a cup of coffee. Apparently I need more to be able to type. LOL

I am in Redondo Beach (about 10 miles south of LAX) and it shook pretty good here. Nothing fell off shelves near the PC, just a good shake. Just part of life in S Ca.

I wish I could have been there today.
I know that y'all may not understand why... I mean I would think you are crazy if you said you wanted to experience a tornado. But for some crazy reason I would just like to experience a mild, NOT dangerous earthquake.
Does that make me kooky?

beachlady - Looked at the Cal Tech web site. Looks like the earthquake was close to the town of Anza - not the Anza Borrega desert which is further south. Anza is about 30 miles east of Temecula and 30 miles southwest of Palm Desert. It's about 40 miles from my house. No wonder I felt it so strong.

It's also interesting to look at the earthquake activity. Since the 5.6 at 8:40 am there have been around 30 small (1.5-2.0) aftershocks. That's 30 in about an hour. Lots of seismic activity going on!!

TxTravelPro - I don't think it makes you crazy. Maybe I am just so used to them that I don't even think twice about it. Did't used to mind them a bit. However, when a huge one hits like the Northridge quake that causes so many deaths and so much damage, you begin to realize the destruction that an earthquake can cause.

I heard it was deep so maybe not a lot of damage? Although they say rolling quakes are more damaging. :(

It was a rolling quake, kind of like being on a ship at sea. The dogs jumped up and barked just before I felt it, how strange about their keen senses.

I had a friend visiting from London during one quake that did little damage and he was so excited! He "phoned home" with the "good" news! So I don't think it is too weird to want to experience a small one, lol.

Felt it here in S. Orange County Ca. It was a good shaker. For a moment, I feared it was really going to take off, but thankfully it didn't~!

And down here in San Diego it was also a pretty good shaker. You could hear it coming.

Since the big quake in San Francisco when the freeway collapsed and the Northridge quake, my fear is being stuck in traffic under a freeway overpass when a big earthquake hits.

I felt it. I am south of Anza. It was a long, gentle roll. Kind of nice actually. My lab picked up her head and gave me the funniest look just before I felt it. I had a feeling when I saw her eyes, something was not right. No damage. The wine glasses clinked together a lot. If they were all like this one, wouldn't be so bad.

We just got back from Palm Desert. No gentle rolling there! It was like a truck hit the side of the building, then a violent shake, and then more minor shaking.

No damage or injuries reported. The desert news stations are reporting that the WalMart closed because some things fell off the shelves, but that's about it. Everyone went about their business.

My mom was staying with the kids here on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and did not feel a thing.

TxTravelPro, I think she feels the same as you. She lives in RI and would like to have felt a real earthquake.

Haven't felt anything in San Francisco, watched the news on TV. Glad no injuries, no damages. This darn shaking may be scary! Boooo!!

Haven't heard about the shaker yet on TV here in Texas. I have to tell you, though, TxTravelPro has a point about wanting to experience earthquakes. I lived in Orange county for almost 20 years and only ONCE was a family member (all east coasters) present for one! They used to feel a little gypped.

Actually, my first year here in Texas I missed not feeling the earth move. And now, after seeing the fury of some storms here, I think I'd rather have earthquakes! They're unpredictable but even the 7.4 I've experienced caused little to no damage to our home. Next week we'll be in San Francisco area and Orange county - so to make me feel at home could all you Californians order one up for me?

Strong but short roller in Long Beach. I was in bed with one cat, listening to the other cat whining for attention ("Lavish love on my shiny, soft fur coat, dammit!"), when it hit. Obviously not a huge deal-- the cats didn't really blink an eye (a closer shaker will have them in bed with me!). My SigO was in the kitchen and said, "No we DIDN'T have an earthquake!" Then I got up and pointed out the gentle slosh of our pool water-- proof of a tremor. I haven't felt as much as a bump ever since. But since we're kinda due for a "big" one, I'm at attention. Time to check out the Quake Kit, I think.

I was in Indian Wells (near Palm Desert) golfing when it hit. We heard the "sonic boom" sound and saw big eucalyptus trees shaking. Then heard & saw rock falls from the cliff face about 500 yard away. It felt like the ground lifted vertically about a foot. Luckily we had tee shots coming up next, rather than short putts. I'm sure the adrenaline added a few dozen yards to the drives.

My brother-in-law lived in California for 40 years, during which time he experienced a number of quakes of all types. Finally he moved away. He grew tired of being generous to a fault.

aggiemom : We're not due for another quake until OCT 2006. Plan yer vacations accordingly.

The risk of the occasional Big Quake won't get me to move. Besides, in the Land of Re-invention, what better way to force a fresh start in your life than to lose worldly possessions?

Hey fehgeddaboudit - so glad they've perfected earthquake prediction! But we're somewhere in CA at least twice a year so we'll shoot for Oct '06. Thanks for the heads up.

Just one quick question, SeaUrchin. Do you have any of those little flag thingies hanging from the loft rafters?

It wasn't a 'quake but Mrs Kal said she felt the Earth move yesterday morning, too. Wish I was home when it hit. :O)

My friend and I were at lunch and I felt it but she didn't, but we were laughing at my life at the time.

I was at a restaurant, TRAXX at Union Station in Downtown LA.
We were like, "Hey! Feel that?"
Very mild movement, we almost thought it was from the construction nearby.
My friend thought said it made her think of the scene in Jurrasic Park with the T-Rex coming.
Cool!

Out of all the times I have been to Southern Califonia, I have never felt an earthquake there. I have seen some of the results, like the one a few years back which closed the Santa Monica freeway. Am heading there again tomorrow. Time will tell if we escape the quake again. But I have felt mild earthquakes, in of all places, at home in suburban Chicago about 15 - 16 years ago, & also when in Cleveland for a hockey tournament about 9 - 10 years ago.
