Only two shows in NYC-which 2?
Hello! I am coming to NYC the first weekend in April and can only see two shows. I have already seen the Producers; which two should I see? I like anything; musicals are great. I've read some reviews online, but they aren't very current, especially regarding SSofSuccess. Please advise. Thanks!
The Crucible with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney and The Graduate with Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs and Alicia Silverstone will both be playing in April as well. Haven't heard any reviews on either of them though. Good Luck!
My husband and I really enjoyed Metamorphoses at the Circle in the Square. Several Greek myths are dramatized in this short production (no intermission). Gorgeous use of a pool.
Iloved "42 Street". We will be seeing "Mama Mia" in May. Have heard great things about this show. Also understand "The Full Monty" is fun. I enjoyed "The Tale Of The Allergist Wife".
Sorry to butt into your thread but does anyone have any must see off or off off Broadway suggestions for April?
To xxx: I'm also interested in off or off-off Broadway shows for April, so I'll start a new thread so we don't horn in on Amy's post. See you there!
You should consider the old stand-bys. Les Mis & Miss Saigon. There is a reason they are still running!
"Miss Saigon" closed. Les Mes is wonderful. "Oklahoma" is opening in April. Also opening in April is "Througly Modern Millie".
Oklahoma was so-so. Dragged a bit. Actually, dragged a lot. I think it ran until almost 11PM. I see everything, so I felt compelled, but wasn't impressed. Seeing 'Millie' next week and will report back. I would pick a musical and a drama. Suggest Full Monty and Proof (Howard, is that still around?) or the Graduate.
Oops, forgot to add that i am seeing the Crucible on Saturday and will report on that as well.
You would really enjoy both 42nd Street and Mama Mia. We didn't want either to end.
Phantom of the Opera has it all-beautiful music, gorgeous custumes, and unbelievable sets. It is just what you think of when you say "Broadway"
Must see: Chicago, Fosse
Shouldn't bother: Rent, Aida
For a straight play, I'd go with Proof (yes, Ellen, it's still playing) or The Crucible.
Musicals: If you haven't see Chicago, Cabaret, Contact or The Full Monty...any of them are well worth your time. Forget about Sweet Smell of Success.
PS: If you're a real theater buff, then go see Elaine Stritch at Liberty. A great show.
Yes! Elaine Stritch! Saw her at the Public before she went to Broadway. But it is a one woman show. Some people don't really care for that, but Stritch is a legend and worth the time.
being a broadway regular, and having seen nearly everything that's on right now this is what I have to say:
Lion King, if you havent' seen it already, it's so beautiful, I've seen it 5 times. Also, Fosse is the classic New York show but the graduate is said to be fantastic if you can get tickets, I haven't seen that yet.
Emmy, for a Broadway regular you sure are off base:
1. Fosse has long since closed. (It was an entertaining show, but " the classic New York show"? Never.)
2. The Graduate is not worth seeing.
Amy, my sister-in-law is an Amy McNamara. Is this you, did you just find out that you are having child #3?

Whoever you are, I just saw THE FULL MONTY and loved it. I have never laughed so hard at the theater. It's my new favorite show!
Thanks much for all your suggestions.

I am thinking of The Full Monty (my boss raved about it when it was here in Chicago) and either Proof or The Crucible. Anyone with opinions between these two?

Also, should I wait for TKTS or get tickets in advance to be sure I get them?

To [email protected]: I don't have even one child, much less three! Sorry! :)

Amy, it depends on when you're going. If it's over a weekend, then definitely get the tickets in advance.
If it's midweek, first, check out the Playbill website (www.playbill.com) and see what's available. Or, you can take you chances at TKTS.
PS: Amy, I just noticed that your original posting said you were coming on a weekend. Definitely get tickets in advance. I wouldn't take the chance. Theater business picks up in April.
How come no one has mentioned The Producers?
Sharon, where have you been? Unless you want to pay scalpers' prices, you can't get tickets on such short notice.
Sharon, you asked why no one has mentioned The Producers. Did you bother to read the question??? It started with "I have already seen The Producers". Why do you bother to post if you don't even read the question?
I saw The Graduate Saturday night and it was great, highly recommend it. I was nervous, coming in for the weekend from Boston to see this show specifically, as it left Boston with mixed reviews. Well worth the 4 hour drive! Kathleen Turner was born for this part, Jason Biggs stole the show, just a great play that moved quickly and didn't drag on. Very humorous at times too. Having said that, Alicia Silverstone.... Within her first 10 minutes onstage, it seemd to me, she couldn't carry the role. There has to be someone else more suited to play this part! I kept thinking that she was trying so hard to prove she could handle Broadway when in fact she isn't ready for it. We got advance tickets from ticketcity.com. Paid a premium for them however we had the most incredible seats. You probaly don't stand a chance getting tickets to a show unless you buy before you go or stand in line at the Times Square booth (by 8am no later)or box office.
Any feedback on the Allergist's Wife? A coworker loves it, but she's not very discriminating as she has loved every show she's seen.
Heard Thoroughly Modern Millie & Full Mony are the shos to see....
Okay, saw The Crucible and Thoroughly Modern Millie this week. Both are excellent and enjoyable. The Crucible is very heavy drama, but Liam Neeson is unbelievable. So, you could pick from those two, 42nd St., Full Monty, Proof, Allergists Wife, and Elaine Stritch. IMO, these are the best Broadway has to offer at the moment.
I generally despise plays but I'd certainly go to the Graduate, starring Kathleen Turner. Just learned she strips down in full ten minutes into the show. Hot damn! She must be desperate.
Saw The Graduate and highly recommend the play. Within the first 20 minutes Kathleen Turner is naked. It is all very tasteful though and she does not embarass herself at all. She comes out in a towel, lights are dimmed, and she drops the towel. The second time she sheds her clothes in the play, she is in a slip, the third time is a bedroom scene and it is full frontal nudity. Once again, very tasteful. If you are at all uncomfortable with nudity I would avoid the play. The moments she is totally naked are brief, no more than a minute, and the lights are dimmed. As a female, when I am her age, I hope I have the body, confidence, and grace to pull it off!
