Have a great time! You have quite a schedule planned. Stay flexible and don't forget to breath. The islands will start working their magic on you in a couple of days and you will start slowwwwwing way down. When that starts to happen...go with it! There are some great casual, local places to eat in Lihue with lots of island flavor (BBQ Inn, Hamura's Saimin and The Tip Top) that might be worth a stop. We loved them! Have a fabulous time.

The community events island mom mentions are great. If you are from the East Coast you really don't want to miss the Okinawian festival. It goes on all day just drop by for some performances.
The Greek Festival is better than anything I have come across in New York. Food is great here.
You do want to take a look at go-Hawaii and see what is on. I saw the best hula of my trip at Moanaloa Garden's, "Prince Lot Hula festival", nothing I would not know about if I skipped that website.
Always a richer experience to visit a festival the community frequents. Have fun.
ONE WEEK BACK pause ....SIGH!!!!

Wow, Islandmom thanks for all the information. I will be in Honolulu the 30, 31 and Sept 1st. Unfortunately we will not be able to go to the brunch or the food festival, but we will try to go to PCC kids hula competition and/or the Okinawan Festival in Kapiolani Park. I have been trying to get on the sea life park website for a few days and I am having trouble, I was thinking the same as you suggested. I should just call them.
Thanks again to all.

Scott find out if the PCC hula competition involves a number of halaus. There is a very clear difference in the performances of a halau member and someone who is not. A halau member will frequently come with a demonstrated commitment to the dance that you can see in the performance. Different halaus have different styles so you want to see a variety if you can. Once you hear a chant and witness old style hula you will see what I mean. A shame to only see the razzle dazzle of modern hula the hotels some time offer.
Another great place for hula is right in Waikiki at sunset near the duke statue. I saw a 12 year old girl here that gave the most amazing performance. Good luck tell us what you find.

Since I just got back from two weeks in paradise - I have some tips to add to these other great ones. Since you're staying at the Moana, try to fit in their free tour of the hotel - the guide tells you all kinds of historical stuff about Waikiki as well. Don't miss the beach bar by the banyon tree - I thoroughly enjoyed the "Lava Flow" and "A Day On The Beach" tropical drinks there.
If you go to Duke's their nachos are great and so are the "Panini" drinks - a lovely banana concoction.
Since someone mentioned macadamia nut pancakes, I had the treat of having what I was told was the best on earth. After eating them, I must agree. There's a little restaurant in Kailua named Boots & Kimo's and their mac nut pancakes are to die for!
Have a great trip!
