One Way rental cars
Trying to find a decently priced one way car rental. (From LA to San Francisco) Tried going through Cheaptickets.com but they weren't any cheaper than the quotes directly from the car companies. Need the car for 3-4 days before dropping off in SF. Most companies are doubling the rental price per day because of the different drop off location. Unfortunately, Priceline doesn't offer one way rentals. Any suggestions?

There are two other options: Sometimes car rental agencies have autos that were rented in SF and dropped off in LA (for instance). They need to return them to SF--so they let you drive them down for a small fee. Second, see if anyone wants a car delivered. Maybe post an ad in the SF newspapers? Both of these are dicey, but possibilities I have seen before.

Try taking greyhound.

Twice in the past two years I've used National car rental for one-way rentals. They don't charge extra for this.

Jil is correct. Over the past several years my husband has taken quite a few one way trips (2 of them multi-state drives) and used National car rental. The only stipulation is, if you haven't dropped off the car by the appointed time (plus an hour grace period), another day's rental is charged.

Avis allows LAX to San Diego one way rentals at no extra charge. Try check with them.
