One Washington Circle Hotel in DC?

My family and I are visiting DC this summer, My wife and I, our two children ages 18 & 12, and my Mother-in-Law age 65. Currently I have reservations at the One Washington Circle Hotel for $99 per night per room. Is this a good hotel? What about location to the tourist attractions? Can you suggest some good restaurants in the area, include all types of cuisine. Can you suggest some other possible hotels in Foggy Bottom? Thanks for your help

I should have been more specific in asking about One Washington Circle when I asked if it was a good hotel. Have any of you stayed there? What was your experience? Is the hotel restaurant a good one? Thanks again.

My husband,Myself & our 4 yr old daughter stayed at One Washington Circle about 3 1/2 yrs ago. It was a beautiful hotel, great location & view. We got upgraded to a jr. suite which was huge! The only thing that bothered us about this hotel was it's proximity to George Washington University Hospital. The sirens during the night made it difficult to sleep. We had a great time in D.C.- especially at the monuments and Smithsonian. Have a great time!

Keith-

I'm sorry I can't respond about the hotel, but the location can not be beat! You will be 1 block from the Foggy Bottom metro station and a short trip to the center of The Mall (less than 10 minutes), a 15 minute walk from Georgetown and about a 15 minute walk to Dupont. I live just around the corner, and my husband and I just love the location. You'll be very close to the Kennedy Center and could walk to Lincoln/Korea/Vietnam Memorials in about 25 minutes.

The West End Cafe in right behind the hotel, I believe, and the weekend brunch is supposed to be very good. If you're looking for a special dinner, Marcel's ($$$) is just down Pennsylvania going towards Georgetown. Bistro Francis($$), Tahoga($$) and Mr. Smith's($) are all good restaurants in Georgetown. Johnny's Half Shell($$) and Pizzeria Paradiso($) are my favorites in Dupont Circle.

I hope you enjoy the area.

Kelli

I'm guessing Johnny's Half Shell is a seafood place, right? Any details?

The location is good. Near GWU, Georgetown, Dupont, the White House, etc. I think this hotel was slated to become a W Hotel a couple of years ago. Not sure why that didn't happen!
Johnny's Half Shell is a cool little place on P Street just off Dupont Circle, serves mostly oysters and the like. Two doors down is Pesce, which is less cool but offers a wider selection of seafood dishes.

For anyone wanting to research restaurants in the DC area:
http://eg.washingtonpost.com/section/restaurants

You are able to search by cuisine type and location. Also, towards the bottom of the page is this year's Dining Guide, something visitors might find useful.

Thanks Kelli for the cool link.
I had tried typing in restaurant names in the guide but hadn't tried searching by the type of food and I hadn't stumbled accross the dining guide until now. Very helpful!

For great take-out food, try Bon Apetit, known as the Bone, at the corner of 21st and I Streets, NW. It's in the little 2000 Pennsylvania mall, but the door is on the street. It's an institution amongst GW students. Also, if you just want something casual, there's a food court in the Marvin Center across the street. You don't have to be a student to go in.

Thanks for your responses! We appreciate your advice. Keep the suggestions coming. Anyone else out there who has stayed at the One Washington Circle Hotel?

I have heard that Johnny's Half Shell is good. Does anyone know about Legal Seafoods in DC? I haven't been there yet, and am wondering.

Freddie Apr 18th, 2002 06:28 AM

I know the Legal Seafoods in Boston is pretty good for a chain restaurant. It is always busy. You can get better seafood but it will cost you.

Kelli Apr 18th, 2002 06:46 AM

I would recommend DC Coast over Legal Seafoods. I went to DC Coast a few nights ago and was quite impressed with the cuisine and the atmoshpere. Granted it's more expensive than Legal, but it's a bit more "DC" and the quality of food is better. Main courses average $20-23; their menu is on-line at www.dccoast.com. They're located on the corner of 14th and K near the Farragut North metro station.

Has anyone stay at the One Washington Circle Hotel recently? Thanks

are the renovations finished?

We'll be in D.C. over Mem'l Day with our 10 yr. old, and thought about One Washington Circle Hotel, too. Take a look at the "ratings" on the Fodors site for the hotel - you'll probably change your mind - good rate or not.

Thanks in advance for letting me know if you come up with any alternatives.

Faith

Keith May 2nd, 2002 11:48 AM

Faith,
I saw those ratings but they have had a major renovation at the One Washington Circle Hotel. I have been told it is a $15 million project, completely gutting the interior of the hotel. They have also added double paned glass to keep out the city noises, including the sirens from the hospital. Looking at the remarks from past guests, the renovations should take care of the problems they had while staying there. At least I am hoping so!!!

Keith - it's a GREAT location - but along with many of Washington's great locations there can be some problems too. I always recommend JWMarriott, the Hyatt on New Jersey and the Holiday Inn downtown but for all those hotels you can still have a street noise problem.
The hotel you have chosen is Foggy Bottom and is not in the midst of touristy downtown DC but DC's subway system is fantastic. Try using the subway or look on Marriott's web site for a great rate 12th and Penn.

Got this hotel for $99 per night in July. Is this a good price? Anyone stayed at the hotel since the renovations? Thanks
