One night stay in NJ
We are driving from Williamsburg, VA to Cape Cod, MA and want to break up the drive with a one night stay in NJ. We do not want to be far from the NJ Turnpike. Any sugguestions on an area where we can enjoy a night out to dinner and do something "touristy"? We want to keep away from the shore; its a Friday night and traffice might be too busy. We do not want to get as far north as Newark. Thanks

I just looked at the map. My suggestion is that you get off at Exit 8 of the Turnpike and stay in downtown Princeton. The town is full of historic charm and always buzzing with activity. There are great shops, outdoor cafes, awesome ice cream shops, good restaurant, coffee shops, etc. You will have lots of options for dinner and its fun to stroll the grounds of the University and look for the black squirrels.
Princeton is maybe 8 miles from the Turnpike.

If you are willing to go about 5 miles north of Newark, i would recommend getting a hotel via Priceline in the East Rutherford/Meadowlands area of NJ. 3 star hotels in this area go for high $30's/low $40's and is less than 2 miles from the NJ Turnpike.
From there you could then spend the nite in Hoboken (about 15 minutes from where your hotel would be) where there are LOTS of restaurant, bars, and cafes. You can also walk to the (Hudson) river and get a remarkable view of the NYC Skyline.
Another option is getting off the Tpke and going to the Rutgers University area. There are plenty of restaurants there and sometimes it's nice to walk around a college town.

Get off at exit 16E & follow the signs to River Road in Weehawken. Sheraton Suites is a nice place to stay. It's right on the Hudson River with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline. There are a Ruth Chris steakhouse, Chart House & Houlihans nearby.
