One night in Upper/Middle Keys, Where to Stay?
I am taking my wife for her first trip to the keys in June. I used to live in the Islamorada area, but I never stayed in any of the hotels except Cheeca Lodge. Can anyone recommend any hotels that are near $200/night or less somewhere between Key Largo and Marathon?

Key Largo Grande, a new resort on the water. We had a lovely room with luxurious beds, pillows, towels, etc. Including all extra fees (parking, internet) and taxes it ran $164/night in early December.

Wow, thanks for the tip about Key Largo Grande. It looks great and reasonable prices. We'll be going down to the keys at some point and this looks fab.

Might want to consider Largo Lodge

I just looked up Key Largo Grande on tripadvisor. Keith, you say it is a new resort. People on tripadvisor say it is very old. Did you stay in a new wing? There are so many really negative reviews about Key Largo Grande, it makes me wonder how your experience was so different from the multitudes on trip advisor (esp since you call it a new resort when it sounds like it's an old building from the TA reviews). Just wondering, is this a different place than what is listed on trip advisor?

This would be enough to keep me from there. From a review:"They do charge you for everything.... $10.00 a day to park, $10.00 a day for internet access, 20% "service charge" on all food orders and an additional $3.00 delivery charge if you order room service"

I believe that's the old Sheraton. If memory serves, it was closed for a time.

birder, Everything looked new to me, though I see that there was a name change and the "new" may be for current mangement and name rather than the building. We stayed only one day, and didn't explore the entire resort.
Looking through the first page of reviewson Tripadvisor, half of the complaints are about the charges for parking and internet. I agree that charging for parking is tacky, but some other Florida resorts do it and I knew this resort did it when I booked my room. The price I listed in my first post is the total that I paid including those charges. My ONLY complaint with Key Largo Grande was the wifi signal wasn't great. BTW: My girlfriend said it was the most comfortable bed she has ever slept in. Keith |
Keith, thanks for the reply. I appreciate it!

We stayed at a great place in Key Colony - right next to Marathon. It's nice because it's off the main drag. We stayed at the Continental Inn - has a nice little beach and pool, great rooms with full kitchen and sitting area. Very reasonable.

I have also stayed at Key Colony Continental. Everything said is accurate, it's a little worn. The Hampton Inn in Islamorada, just a mile or so W of Cheeca is a good option. Also has a nice pool and mini beach. Short walk to the Hammock, a fine restaurant.

just stayed at the key largo grande in january well under 200/night it was fine. i don't however recommend the restaurant for dinner. food okay but way $$ for what you get and very limited menu. employees were very nice. bay beach nice too good pool and good spa

I take back anything good about Key Largo Grande. They have started spamming the email address I used to reserve my room and ignore my request to stop.
