One Night In Los Angeles
 

I will be Amtrak-ing it from Seattle to San Diego either this fall or early next year and will need to transfer in Los Angeles. The train is scheduled to arrive in LA at 9 PM. There is a 10 PM departure to San Diego, but I don't trust the train to remain on schedule, nor do I want to arrive in SD at 1 in the morning, so I've decided to stay the night in LA and take an early morning train to SD.

I'm looking at hotels that are in close proximity to Union Station. I've narrowed it down to the Marriott on South Figueroa, the Hilton on South Grand, and the Hyatt on South Hope. Does anyone have any experiences with or comments on these hotels? Also, how is the area? I'm only staying one night, but I'd like it to be a pleasant one.

Not sure what day you are staying, but the weekends are kind of dead downtown except for when there are plays or sporting events. The Marriott is a little further up the street from things, but you could easily walk from the Hyatt or Hilton to places. I used to work in the building connected the Hyatt and it's a very nice hotel. I think the Hilton is a little fancier. The Marriott is nice too, but like I said a little further up with nothing much surrounding it. There is a movie theater there.

I'll only be there from late on a Monday night to early on a Tuesday morning, so I won't be doing anything except sleeping. :) I was just wondering about the reputation of the area for curiosity's sake.

Of the three hotels you are considering, I would recommend the Hilton Checkers. It is a smaller upscale hotel (188 rooms vs. 400+ rooms), with a quite attentive staff. Also, it is located closer to restaurants, sights and activities. It is across the street from the Millenium Biltmore and the Water Grill Restaurant and Bar, and around the corner from Cafe Pinot and McCormick & Schmick restaurant. Three blocks north, along Grand Avenue, is the Museum of Contemporary Art, and one block further is the Walt Disney Concert Hall -- designed by Frank Gehry -- which is definitely worth a visit. Bring your camera. Have a pleasant stay in L.A.
