One night getaway in Vermont - where?
DH and I are traveling with his parents to Vermont to visit and stay with his cousin in Addison area in early October. The In-laws have suggested they keep our daughter one night while we go out to nice dinner and spend the night in a B&B/Inn. My question is where should we go? I would like to keep the drive under 2 hours. What woud you suggest? We would like to have a nice dinner and a neat town to walk around in either the first afternoon or the morning after. Looking forward to hearing suggestions. I know it is a busy time but I'm hoping I can find a room mid-week somewhere. Thanks.

I don't know where Addison is but I recommend either Woodstock, Dorset or Manchester. In Dorset, we have stayed at the Barrows HOuse twice and really enjoyed our stay there.
I believe we drove through Grafton and Arlington & those towns looked very nice, too. Or possibly Bennington, Vt. Burlington is nice, too, but a city, not a town and much further north than the places I suggested. |
Addison is south of Burlington - their place is near Lake Champlain. Places I was considering are Middlebury or Stowe. I will look up Dorset and Grafton. Thanks.

Middlebury would be a great choice. The Waybury Inn is nice and has a good restaurant as does the Swift House Inn.
If you want a more "lively" atmosphere, consider Burlington. It's a small city on Lake Champlain and has lots of great restaurants/bars/shops. |
A while back, maybe 14 or so years ago, we spent the weekend in Rutland, VT at a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house - The Phelps House - very, very charming. I vaguely remember a spiral staircase... And the gourmet breakfast was phenomenal! I would google or ask the innkeeper if the area has the quaint-walk-around-the-town feel that you're looking for. It's been so long that I honestly don't remember.

Check out the Inn at Baldwin Creek and Mary's Restaurant, Bristol, VT. Lovely rooms and spectacular food -- and a breakfast that will be remembered!
We've been there several times, when we can take the time. (It's a bit of a drive north from where we are in the Rutland area.) |
We've found that the Waybury Inn had gorgeous rooms, but we were a bit disappointed by the service at dinner AND breakfast time! (Food was great, but service was so-so.)
By the way, this is the inn where Bob Newhart's show was shot. You'll see a framed photo of him at the front desk! |
I booked us a room at the Swift House Inn. We are looking forward to it! Any restaurant suggestions for Middlebury?

We ate at the Storm Cafe in Middlebury as we were travelling through town based on recommendations from this site. It was excellent especially the Halibut in a red curry sauce.
